Barrel Liner ??
« on: February 02, 2005, 06:42:05 PM »
'bout what's the cost to put a barrel liner in an old Marlin lever gun ??

Also -- Anyone in the mid-west who does it real good ??  It's a 38-40 -- Heavy as hell but fun to shoot if I use oversized slugs.

OK - I give up.  Anywhere, someone reliable who put liners in old rifles.  Who - Where and how much typically ??

4th edit -- It's an old Marlin with a shot out barrel.  Needs a liner so I don't have to shoot 0.406 slugs and can reload all ammo to .401.

5th edit:  Just found out that my local 'smith don't do this caliber.  Help ??

Post 6 -- Hasn't anyone out there had a rifle barrel lined ??  Seems I've seen some posts about it here.  There's got to be some shade tree gunsmiths or real "smiths who know.

Hemlock, get hold of Steve Young at 409-984-5473. He talked to me about getting him a rifle length barrel liner in .357 for a 92 he's working on.  He may be able to help you.
Well..........Bye!

Mike, I had my 1889 done a while back. My own smith did it, put in a Redmonds, I believe, from Brownells. It was in 38-40 as well. Unless you look real hard, you can't tell. ran me a little over $250 with the Governor's due. when I took it to the range, I didn't even have to reset the sights! ;D It shoots right nice. Mine has the round barrel..........Buck 8) ::) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

If ya don't have any luck there, ya might try Craig Rittenhouse, Tamaqua, Pa. at 570-277-0381; or Redmond's, Omak, Wash. at 505-826-5612; or Beinke & Beinke, Sprague River, Oreg. at 541-533-0907.  They all advertise in The Gun List for re-lining,  good Luck.

I talked to Steve Young today - Quoted $295 and was a little skeptical of doing it in my round barrel Marlin.  Seems that when the drill goes through, there ain't too much left.

Thanks for the info.

Mike, My smith didn't seem to have a problem with it. Did say he had to remove the sights. Mine went back together, no problem. It's 114 yrs old and you can't tell it's been lined unless you look really hard and have to know what to look at to see it. Mine has the round barrel also..........Buck 8) ::) ;)

My gunsmith lined my 105 yr. old Winchester 94 in 38-55. It has a round barrel and turned out just fine. It was the opinion of the smith that with the stronger modern steel of the liner that you are losing nothing. He called it "A barrel in a barrel". It shoots way better than I can hold it.

Thanks for the help.  A local pard has had guns lined by a couple smiths you have listed.  I will try them.
