Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Capt. Tex, did you get your inspiration from one of the baddies in the new "3:10 from Yuma" or did he see you?

Howdy Pards,

I used a Confederate Civil War pattern for the pants.  The vest was from the fabric store.  It looks funny, but it is authentic and very warm.  Kept me and the missus busy over the Michigan winter.

Here is my Scout look. Hat by Golden Gate (Knudsen) Leather is a double crossdraw for 75 Remingtons with a Fair Weather Christian belt by RedDog Leather.

Since ya mentioned gettin some Schofields, I thought ya would like to see the "Man With No Name" rig that RedDog made for Old Top's Schofields....they came out pretty nice..

SJ, The only difference between the hat you ended up after getting serious with and mine is the color!  Yep, you did a fine job of reshaping that hat.

Savvy Jack,

The outfit below was assembled over the past eight years or so – not sure if the suppliers still sell what I got from them, however worth contacting them to see if they still carry what I got back in the day.

Hat: ‘Boss of the Plains’ clone from Clearwater Hats

Shirt: band-collar shirt I got some years back from a mainstream CW sutler but can’t remember which one (sorry), it is defarbed - re-did button holes by hand and added original small glass buttons

Drawers: C&D Jarnigan – full-length domet flannel, reworked buttonholes by hand, added proper buttons, and cut off legs

Trousers: made by me from brown Family Heirloom Weavers jeancloth, modified Richmond Depot army pants pattern from County Cloth/Chas Childs to make ‘California’ pants, reproduction hardrubber buttons from the Blockade Runner, back-belt buckle from Trans-Mississippi Depot

Socks: hand-knit wool from Nancy Eddin’s Emporium

Boots: Missouri Boot & Shoe

Belts, holster, knife scabbard: made by me, got roller buckles from Trans-Mississippi Depot

If you’ve got a knack for sewing making your own clothing is a great way to go, using a period treadle machine is relatively easy and they are simple to restore (and note - they don’t backstitch, so you'll have to hand-finish). A little research on fabrics, patterns and all that jazz will yield excellent items and you can make them as authentic as you’d like. PM me if you have any questions &c on this sort of stuff.

Best of luck assembling future outfits.

Thanks Brass, that is one nice looking outfit as well as a nice B&W photo. I thought it was a real old photo. I got a bad habit of looking at pics before reading!!!!!!

Savvy, take MJB's advice.  Check out his recommended sources and get ideas.  I'm glad I did.  I started copy/pasting photos from merchants' on-line catalogs into Excel, building my own catalog of ideas.  I'm planning on going townie, but civilian sack coats are out of my league.  I knew from my research here and the merchant web sites I'd bookmarked, what I could get by with.  As the budget allows, build.  Note that MJB's is from 8 years of remodeling, as it were.

It's good to hear from you, MJB.  Been a while.

Savvy Jack – The picture is modern-made ferrotype (aka ‘tintype’ made by an excellent photographer on period equipment and process at the 2007 NCOWS National in Kentucky). I included the entire image below so’s you can see my good pard James Hunt too. His outfit and documentation are great so it’s good to see his duds as well. If you need more sources and documentation PM me – I might have something squirreled away that could be of use.

Hey there BP, hope things are good for you in Ohia. I don’t check the CAS postings very frequently and I’ve been out of the old west scene this year – just finishing up a 6 month assignment for work. It wiped out the summer for old west activities. Looking forward to shooting with you next season at Sandusky or preferably at an NCOWS shoot.

Savvy Jack it looks like we are both going for the same time period! 8) My character is one that rode cavalry in the Civil War with Forrest and is now an open range cowboy. I am a Civil War buff and attend alot of reenactments and such which is where I pick up the majority of my items. We are actually fortunate enough to have a man close by that makes VERY AUTHENTIC looking period clothing. The CW reenactors around here swear by him because of his dedication to be as historically accurate as possible.
A little pricey but I hope to get a few pieces (especially trousers) made by him in the future. As far as my hat and boots....the boots are mule ear stove pipes from The Fort Frontier and the hat is a reshaped Bailey 5X kind of in the shape of the hat that The Man With No Name ;) wore in so many of his movies.
