Howdy---New guy here with Laramie question
« on: September 06, 2008, 05:00:19 PM »
Howdy, Brothers of the BOSS:

I would like to pose a couple of questions to ponder & discuss.

I am looking at possibly getting a pair of Beretta Laramie Schofiields for SASS main match.
I read the last TG Bulletin about them & they do appear to be ruled as a "traditional" revolver.

Does ANY present day manufacturer make a breaktop in .44 Special?

Is it possible to re-bore the chambers & star of a .38 Laramie to .44 Special?
Is it possible to re-line the barrel of a .38 Laramie with a .429" blank?

Are the last 2 questions LOCO TALK????

Much obliged,
Mustang Gregg

I am no expert but I believe they only come in 44-40 or 45LC or 45 Schofield or 38. Hope you don't expect to shoot holy black in em. I have a 44-40 Schofield that took a while to get the BP out of after 5 shots. :-[ :(

MG,

The Schofield and Laramie are two different revolvers that share some of the same internal parts.  I do not believe that either one is available in 44 Special.  IIRC the Russian is available in 44 Russian [44 Special SHORT!!].  Just checked the Uberti web site and the No. 3, New Model Russian is offered in 44Russian & 45 Colt.  The Schofield is offered in 44-40, 45 Schofield and 45 Colt and 38 Spl.

If you got the 44-40 Schofield and a 38 cylinder you could get it chambered for the 44 Spl.  Probably only cost as much to get it modified as the revolver costs new! :o ;D  But, if it's what yer hankerin for, go for it!!

Nope, no BP for these here six-shooters.
I have seen it done---Not successful after about 2 cylinders full.  >:(

Still pondering a re-do of some .38 Laramies.

MG:

I'm not aware of any of the breaktops being available in 44SP.

Laramie is only 45 Colt and 38SP.
The Russian is only in .44 Russian and (I believe recently) 45Colt.
Schofield (IIRC) is 45Colt, 38SP and 44-40.

Obviously, smithing can sometimes do wonders if cost doesn't matter. But do be careful. Even though these models use some interchangeable parts, cylinders and frame sizes are not always among them.

I can get my .44 Russians to run all day on BP and never touch them for anything but loading and unloading. You can easily convert the .44 Russian cylinder to the .44 Special. The Laramies are still not legal for Traditional, but I hope that changes.

Howdy Pards
Dont mean to hijack the thread, but this brings up a question i have. Could a Laramie be converted to .44-40? I want to acquire a breaktop in .44-40, but i prefer the latch of the Laramie(which to me seems more stable) than that of a Schofield.

Thanks,
Jrw

With enough money... anything's possible.   ;)  ???

Seriously, depending on cylinder length, I suppose a .38SP Laramie could be bored out to your caliber and the star/hand arrangement reworked to ensure timing.

Here's one for you to try, Dave.

Will the Barrel/cylinder assembley from your Russian inter-change with your Laramie?
(This would create a .44 Russian "New Model Three:"  the way its supposed to be.  Except for the long ejector howsing)

Booksy:

Don't think so. (Already thought about that.)

I'd have to try it to be absolutely sure, but the Russian's cylinder looks to be shorter than the Laramie's (and therefore also the corresponding inside spacing of the frame, of course).
