Remington Navy Rides Again!
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:39:03 PM »
Well, it poured like Noah's flood today in Charleston, until 2pm, then the sun came out and it's cooled off! So, I headed to the range with the Navy after work. She faithfully fired for probably the first time since the end of the war. As you can see, the results weren't bad at all. This is 10 yards from a rest, but it looks like the ol' girl still has some spunk. These are actually the third cylinder. The hit way out at 2 o'clock was the first round from a wet swabbed bore. Hold is 6 o'clock at the bottom of the paper. The target is 60% of the size of an N-SSA 50 yard musket target. Now I've got to clean everything.

Well, ain't that just sweet! What a joy to take an old girl like that and let her sing again. Man it's right on to where you want it to shoot. It doesn't get any better than that.

I do not have an original, just two beaters from off various classifieds. I shoot the .375 and .380 balls and the LEE 130 gr conical in mine. The conical will shoot a little higher than the balls. I shoot 20grs FFFg+lube wad+ball or 20grs and the conical and no wad. I don't know the dimensions on an original.

Wolfgang,
I'm shooting .375s, since that's all I can find around here. They are none too tight in the chambers. The cylinder mics to 0.374" to 0.3745" depending on which chamber. I haven't slugged the barrel due to some roughness in the throat, which is hopefully shooting out. Actually, I tried to slug it back a couple months ago, but the effort wasn't too successful. The muzzle mics, groove edge to groove edge, 0.371", which is probably a little tighter than the true groove diameter. With 5 groove rifling, it's not easy to mic. I'd like to find some .380 balls.

By the way, I shot 16 gr. FFF, 1cc of Cream of Wheat, a pasteboard card wad, ball, and dollop of Bore Butter to top it off. Caps were RWS 1075s.

LEE Precision makes a nice double cavity mold for both the .380 ball and the 130gr conical (which seats just fine and is an accurate hard hitting little pill).

Arizona Trooper, . . thanks for the information.   I keep hoping for "Halway Creek Charlie" to surface again. . . he's been among the missing for a long time.   I wanted bore and cylinder infor on .44s and I know he has several originals, . . . never could get any info over at the "Remington Society" . . . not a very active board over there.

Good shootin' . . . .  :)

Howdy Hoof......how're you doing?
 Been awhile since we talked.

What got into Charlie that he sold off eveything? That's surprising!

Hope all is well with you..... ;)

I better get a hold of Charlie, he just emailed me the end of the month had moved and settled ready to buy more ASP, Euroarms and Ubertis. Strange news...he's only about 15-20 miles from me and seemed like all was cool.
Where he moved was right near a Buffalo Ranch...cool place.
What I find out I'll pass on if all is well.

Smokin,.....thanks for sharing the info. Glad to hear Charlie is settled and ok. Would be good to see him on the forums sometime.

That's right! He moved up north in CA.
He did say he might get a couple of repoop Remmies some time "if he ever got back into it". He kept his brass and reloading stuff.

I get the impression he needs to be sure he is in a stable place. After the last living arrangement went bad he liquified a lot of stuff.
