Navy Arms Schofield in 44-40 and black?
« on: July 08, 2008, 11:01:14 AM »
Howdy gents. Found a NIB Navy Arms 44-40. Was wondering if they do alright with black, or will they still have the usual BP problems associated with other Schofields. Thanks. DM

The NA Schofield fouling problem is due to the lack of a decent gas ring because the cylinder is lengthened to accept 45 Colt and 44-40.  The 45 Schofield (original) cylinder was shorter.  I have Russians as well, and the Uberti made 44 Russian cylinder is longer than the original, but a bit shorter than the Schofield, but it still doesn't like black powder.

That being said, I have original S&Ws in 44 Russian, and they don't shoot many rounds without fouling out either.....

Blowback, which the 44-40 case will reduce greatly, helps most in the rifles.

Navy Arms, the current Cimarrons, Taylors, and everyone else currently selling Schofields are all the same.  They are Ubertis and all suffer the same problems with BP.

I have a NA Schofield and it is in 44-40, I have talked to people that use BP in them and yes they foul but if you give em' a squirt before the stage you'll get through. I am waiting for some reloading tools and will be trying some out in mine, may get some of DD's Big Lube's for the 44 afterwards if all goes well.  8) 8) 8)
Update....
Well I tried BP in my 44-40 and APP, 5 rounds and no cylinder turn looks like only fad powders for this one!
