1871/72 Shooting Low and to the left
« on: June 10, 2008, 10:00:59 AM »
My OT's are shooting about 4" to the left and about 3" low ( working on a heaver load to correct this)at 14yds.

Anyone ever done a "Point of Aim" on a OT?

Also Can opening the rear sight to the right correct shooting to the left?

Any Information is a help.

Thanks Much

Low Left sounds like you're jerking the trigger.  Try em over a rest, and let someone else shoot them before you start fooling with sights.

If you're shooting smokeless it may be the load. These guns shoot far closer to POA with real BP IMO. Have someone else try your load as well to be objective.  ;)

Hiya 1SG.  My OT is a Cimmaron in 44 Russian/44 Colt.  I just shot it the other day at 15 yards and it shot dead on point of aim for me with the loads I had on me.  (These are 44 Russians with the MAV 210gr BigLube bullet and 4.4grs of W231.)  Clustered three shots into a cloverleaf and then two other shots were about 1.5" away - one up and slightly to the right, and the other low and slightly to the left...  I'm not prepared to blame the gun for that, and it's definitely well within "minute of CAS targets."

You don't say what load your shooting or what caliber, but hopefully my info helps some way.

  I shoot double duelist w/ a 147gr. .357 in both my .38's, 3.2 gr Vita Vori 320. thru both my 1871/72 uberties

Have Lasier sighted them and took them to the range and the results are the same both guns low and left. I'm just trying to get a POA thats right on target, guns are well within "minute of CAS"

  Thanks for the Info.

Hmmm... Well, heavier bullets shoot higher, so you could move up to 158s.  I like VV N320 - I loaded a LOT of it back when I had a deal with Kaltron-Pettibone.  It's about like Red Dot, as far as burning speed, so you're load sounds reasonable, though a tiny bit on the light side (not unreasonable for shooting through OTs).  I don't know if a different powder would help or not, but it's worth a try before doing work to the metal.
