Lever Springs Interchangeability?
« on: May 07, 2008, 10:01:09 PM »
Are the lever springs interchangeable between the '73 and the '76?
I don't own a '73 - but I'm guessing ... Yes!

And if they are ... I'm buying a pair - The Whisper Spring Kit

And what would you all think about a Group Buy for 11 or more?

The springs on a 76 are larger than those of a 73. Remember a 76 is a 73 on steroids

I have the Whisper Springs on both my Uberti 73's.  I can check to see if they would work on the Chaparral 76.

Off hand, the whisper Springs may be a bit light and small.

I have been wrong before, and this just opens the bolt again!  ::)

Bill:  I looked in Arthur Pirkle’s – Winchester Lever Action Repeating Firearms and it ‘looks’  as those there is no size difference for the springs between the ’73 and ’76 originals.  Also, I have spoke with Nick Ecker at Charter Arms and he informed me that the ’76 Chaparral’s are a 99.99% clones of the originals.

I and many others have the Chaparral ’76 – so am willing to take gracious your offer.  Good possibility that a Group purchase order could be in the making …

Subject: RE: Whisper Spring Set Interchangeability

Howdy John Boy,
I am not sure if the '73 Whisper Springs fit the '76 however I have received a couple of e-mails from customers that have told me they installed the WS's in their '76 Chaparrals.  If you would like to try a set I'll be glad to send a set to you with an invoice.  If they fit just send me a check, if not just send them back.
Just need your mailing address.
Thanks for the inquiry,
Hap

I am waiting on a bolt from Charter Arms, and Then I can see if the springs in my 73, fit in the Chaparral 76.

I would be willing to get a group purchase.

Received the Whisper Springs from Happy Trails at The Smith Shop.  They are too short for the '76 ... won't be the first time I was wrong!  :o

The ’76 Lifter Spring measurements are – measured as if the spring was flat with no arc:
Overall Length – 2  11/16”
Length from hooked end to Screw Hole – 2”
Width of the hooked end of the spring – 11/16”
Width of spring base – 9/16”

Asked HAP if he would consider making the Springs to fit the '76 ... Stay Tuned

Cool!

I would also suggest that Hap consider using a heavier gauge wire in deference to the 76.  I cut down the springs on my Uberti, and it really does make it a pleasure to run.  These are not race rifles, but a smooth, but snappy action is a pleasure for sure!

Grizzly - coincidental you should ask.  Hap sent me a nice one page letter with the test springs - snippets:
... The Springs are made of 0.062 music wire.  I have had requests asking for a heavier spring
... So I will have some prototypes in the next few weeks made from 0.067/0.069 wire
... Since the '76 has a heavier carrier (and lever too) these new springs may work better for you
... Let me know how you make out

We are on the road for 'Slicked Up '76's)!  ;D

Sweet! ;D  Now if we can figure a way to turn them into main match rifles!  Now that would be a catagory! :D
