58 snubbie and mods

I have almost finished this (Pietta) project gun to show the modifications I have made.

It has a gas ring on the cylinder, frame modified to accept it, barrel shortened to 4-1/2 inches, Uberti dovetail front sight installed.  A new latch for the cylinder pin of my manufacture, which includes a rammer plug and latch travel limit built in.  A Ruger coil and plunger hand spring and new hand of 4140 steel made for longer life (not shown).  This gun also has a Ruger coil mainspring and strut, but that may be overkill.

I have designed a cylinder pin latch to fit the (cast frame) Uberti as well, which uses the same latch but a different plug body.

Two versions of the latch assembly, the latest, version is easier for me to make. (It's the stainless one)

This should probably be written up and placed on the SCORRS web site!! :o

Does the screw for the grips clear the Ruger main spring or does the screw have to be relocated?

If you look at the "before and after" picture, you will see the new screw location in the grip panel.  The original location would have to pass through the coil spring.  I haven't made new grips for this gun yet, as I'm still considering the material to use, wood or otherwise.

Nice work! 

I'd be very interested in hearing how well the Ruger mainspring works out.  I have simply hour glassed my main springs and that helped a lot but if'n the the Ruger spring works well I might be tempted to emulate your work - I'll never match your workmanship but as long as high precision work isn't required and it's a part that won't be seen I figure I could cobble something workable together.

That looks almost like it could have been Bill Ruger's prototype for the Old Army.  I really like the plug/retaining clip idea.  I would think some people might buy those for their conversions etc.
