Cast Bullet Help
« on: March 24, 2008, 05:45:46 PM »
I just picked up a Uberti 1876 in 45-60 and can't wait to get out to the range with it.  BIG PROBLEM: I don't cast my own bullets and I'm having a hard time finding a commercially available cast bullet that meets the 45-60 O.A.L. without seating it to a point where I'm crimping half way up the ogive. Can anyone suggest a bullet?  Thanks much.

Sir Charles,

I appreciate the help, thanks.  However, from what I can gather from the thread and the BigLube web page, is that they sell moulds and not bullets.  Though casting appears to be in my future, right now I just trying to get the rifle on the range... any ideas?

Col K,

Check out Springfield Slim's web site, www.whyteleatherworks.com.  He sells a modified Big Lube bullet that works well in both the 45-60 & the 45-75.  My shooting pard and I have been using these bullets in both calibers with great results.

He calls it the 45-60/45-70 300 grain bullet.  They can be had sized and lubed and the prices are included on his web page.

Give it a try.  It is a great bullet.

Hell-Er High Water,

I just ordered a batch... are you using BP or smokeless in your loads?  The article said the bullets are pretty soft, I was wondering if you ever had any leading issues?

Ya don't get leading issues with soft bullets going relatively slow. It's using hard bullets that are too small that really get ya. I use the same soft alloy for my wife and brother's 45 Colt guns using smokeless and Liquid Alox. So far no leading in the last 4 years. Worked just as well when I Moly coated the bullets, but the LLA is easier and faster. I modified a mould for Hell'er so now he can make his own, so I suppose we will get more shooting results from him soon. Don't have a 45-60 myself.
