Who reloads for a Uberti 44-40 Henry, Need help

I am wondering what bullet size has worked well for those of you who reload for a Uberti Henry in 44-40. Does .427, .428 or .429's work best. Have any of you slugged your Henry barrels? I am wondering so that I might get what seems to be the best bullet so I don't spend alot of money on trying the others ones out. Thanks for any help provided

I have always used the same .429 bullets in the 44-40 that I do in my 44 Russians.
 I have never slugged the barrel but with lead bullets I don't think .001 or .002 over sized
 isn't going to cause problems and I would much rather have an oversized bullet than a undersize one.

At the pressures we shoot in CAS there wouldn't be a problem and an undersized bullet is sure to cause leading.

I also have only used .429" boolits in my .44-40 Henry. They work very well for me.

.427 or .429 will work, but, your better off with a .429" since its less likely to create setback while in the case.

I think someone slugged the Uberti henry back in 2005 and said he saw that it was a .4285" using the Meister kit.

Better to have a .429" than a .427" with that setup.

Wheres the best place to find .429's   All I can find is .427 and .428's

Every rifle varies. Mine is 0.430. I never take anyone's word for groove diameter. Slug the bore.

With the 44-40 it's not always the bore diameter that determines the bullet diameter, as the chambers vary all over the place.  Most of my revolvers and one 66 Carbine will not accept a bullet larger than 428, and only if that's in a Winchester case.

Remington brass is the thickest, and I must size to .427 to chamber them.  My Henry, 73 and 66 Rifle will accept .429 in a Winchester or Starline case.

Yip, the same here, i could only load the .429 in my Winchester or in the Starline cases.
My best results i have with the 205gr. Hornady bullets in .427  with 8.2 gr. N340 in the the Starline case with Winchester LP.
But as Fox said, every rifle varies.

I agree with Fox Creek Kid. They vary. Forget what Cimarron says about the groove diameter, they are just quoting the general spec that Uberti puts out. It does not account for tool wear. My Uberti '73 slugs out at .427, my Henry is .429. The comments about chambers are also correct. With a tight chamber you may not be able to fully chamber a round with a bullet as large as your groove diameter requires. I can shoot .427, .428, and .429 bullets through my .427 groove '73 just fine, but the chamber does not like to accept rounds with .429 bullets in them.

With my two different groove diameters I have compromised on .428 dead soft lead Mav-Dutchman bullets. Everything is fine.

hi, I'm new here so "hello everyone!". my henry seems to like just about all the loads I've run through it except the winchester cowboy 225gr lead loads. haven't slugged my bore yet. we shoot at a deullin tree at 50 yds and all of these loads will hit every time from a slow steady rest. 200gr winchester jacketed [.427] 8.5gr unique wlp primer. 200gr winchester jacketed [.427] 14gr alliant 2400 cci350 primer. 200gr meister hard lead [.428] 8gr unique wlp primer. 200gr meister hard lead [.428] 14gr alliant 2400 cci350 primer. all loads with winchester brass. all loads seated only then crimped separately with lee factory crimp die. have not seen any signs of high pressure with these loads. I have not loaded any of these loads higher than listed here. start out 10% below these loads for your first shots through your firearm. I also weigh every powder throw before it goes in the case. the winchester cowboy does not hit every time for me. hope this helps to getcha started-taternoggins
