That's really neat.  Note the grease groove size and design.
Sincerely,

A pard of mine builds flintlocks :o He "finds" amazing stuff everytime he looks for whatever it is he has missplaced!
When I met him he was sitting in the only clean (as in not cluttered) spot in the middle of his shop floor and hand carving raised floral designs on a stock. You gotta see this guys work ;D His rifles start around 10GRAND! Oh yea, he also shoots cannons, and works as armorer on a lot of period correct films. He and his rifled cannon did all of the live fire and soundtrack work on the newest Alamo movie.

HH - are my eyes tricking me or are those WRA 40-60's bevel based?  The old Ideal 403168 (210gr) ones were straight sided.
PS - Great find!

No John Boy, your eyes aren't tricking you.   Winchester put a beveled shoulder on the base of all their lead bullets with grease grooves, if the bullet was intended for black powder.   This included factory loaded ammo, reloading components such as those shown above and bullet molds.  The only exception were those bullets and molds which were designed for paper patches.

Nice find Hoof Hearted.

Adios,
Buck

Hoof Hearted,

I am bring this up from the past because I am now interested in maybe getting a 40/60.

Can you tell me the length of one of these original bullets?

Does anyone know the corresponding Ideal or Lyman mold # for this bullet?

Thanks

   Greetings!

The Lyman / Ideal #403168 is the original bullet for the .40-60WCF ctg. I picked one up several years ago for when I, "get around to loading for this cartridge"... EBay Is a GREAT place to get odd moulds; Gun Shows are very good, as well. You may also cruise the 'Net, and find custom mould makers that will duplicate different designs.

I would bet Accurate Molds would be able to duplicate that bullet, especially if you would be willing to let them borrow one as a pattern.  Actually, that would probably be a good way to get correct bullet molds for ANY of the '76 calibers.

I got two molds from HOCH CUSTOM BULLETS down in Roswell, NM.  One was for a 40-82 and the other for a 45-75.  Both are beutiful and very accurately made but they are spendy.  they are Nose Pour.  What I did was make a copy of pictures of original molds and send them to them and that was what I got--an exact duplicate of the originals.  It might be worth your effort to contact them and get their catalog and price listings.
When in doubt, mumble!
