The bean counters had it worked to the penny. They bought us used rentals once. Tauri ‘n Luminas. They’d be quick to tell ya how much mileage they got out of them. They’d compare the costs of repairs ‘n maintenance to the savin’s o’er the new costs of cars appropriate for the use. What we couldn’t get thru their ‘dollars ‘n lack of ‘cents’’ heads was we didn’t have cars when they were stuck in the garage for repairs. Most the mechanics at the garage were semi-competent at best ‘n they’d keep a car three days for a two hour repair.
The Luminas developed the habit of lockin’ in o’erdrive. Imagine, if ta will, stickin’ a manual in fourth gear ‘n tryin’ to drive around town without usin’ the clutch. That’s what it was like. The one I was assigned did it. I was amazed at how quickly the city garage was gettin’ ‘em fixed ‘n back to us. Stopped at the garage one afternoon ta thank my pard, the foreman, for the fast turn around.
He was always straight up with me. They weren’t fixin’ ‘em. All they was doin’ was unpluggin’ the wire that told the transmission ta go inta overdrive. Problem solved.
