How to keep fromgetting wacked by the sight
« on: July 26, 2007, 05:27:52 PM »
Our CAS match had a side shoot long range single shot.  I shot a Browning Hi-wall in 38-55 and the recoil is mild.  One of the shooters had a nice Sharps in 45-120 which he let me shoot.  I shot it from a sitting position without x-sticks.  The sight hit my safety glasses.  No damage done, but it was a surprise.  Did I just need to lean into it more.  I did not have a real tight grip on it.

I've never had that problem with my Sharps, but with my trapdoor, my thumb will sure get me in the nose if I don't get the butt right in the small of my shoulder.
With a trapdoor as you shoot it you start getting sore and don't even realize that you've shifted the butt out onto your bicep. When you do that it'll get you in the face every time, and it's a thump that'll bring tears to your eyes. Maybe that was your problem with the sharps.

No offense but it also could just plain be more recoil than you can handle, lean into a gun with heavy recoil to much and it will hurt you.

I've shot worse kicking guns.  This was more of a strong push.  I was probably holding it like I do my 38-55 with a loose grip.  Never even though about how it would recoil until the tang sight hit my safety glasses.  Didn't hurt, mostly startled me.

I shoot several guns with tang sights. 40-70SS, 45-70 & 50-70.

If the tang sight is designed so that will move forward as well as backward from it's positioning notch no harm will be done when the recoil pushes it back against your glasses.

In order to get a good sight picture I have to creep up on the stock with my eye very close to the sight aperature (it's hell getting old) so when the gun is fired the recoil pushes the sight back making contact with my safety glasses.

The only problem that I have is remembering to check the sight before the next shot to get it back in it's vertical positioning notch.
