This was on the radio this morning:

He was an old-time cowboy, don't you understand
His eyes were sharp as razor blades his face was leather tan
His toes were pointed inward from a-hangin' on a horse
He was an old philosopher, of course.

He was so thin i swear you could have used him for a whip
He had to drink a beer to keep his britches on his hips
I knew i had to ask him about the mysteries of life
He spit between his boots and he replied

"It's faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, and more money"

He smiled and all his teeth were covered with tobacco stains
He said, "it don't do men no good to pray for peace and rain.
Peace and rain is just a way to say prosperity,
And buffalo chips is all it means to me.

I told him I was a poet, I was lookin' for the truth
I do not care for horses, whiskey, women or the loot
I said I was a writer, my soul was all on fire
He looked at me an' he said, "you are a liar."
"It's faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, and more money"

Well, I was disillusioned, if I say the least
I grabbed him by the collar and I jerked him to his feet
There was something cold and shiny layin' by my head
So I started to believe the things he said

Well, my poet days are over and I'm back to being me
As I enjoy the peace and comfort of reality
If my boy ever asks me what it is that I have learned
I think that I will readily affirm

"It's faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, and more money" (repeat 2x)

The train is rolling down the track,
Listen to the wheels go clickety clack,
Over the bridge, around the bend,
Taking me for a ride.

The engine's up at the front of the train,
Pulling all the cars through the sun and the rain,
Over the bridge, around the bend,
Taking me for a ride.

When the engineer pulls the throttle down,
And the whistle starts to blow,
You can hear that sound for miles around,
And it lets all the people know,
That the train is rolling down the track,
Listen to the wheels go clickety clack,
Over the bridge, around the bend,
Taking me for a ride.

Now we sit here in the passenger car,
And the freight car's next in line,
And way in back is the little caboose,
Rolling along behind.

And people stand by the railroad side,
And wave to us as we go by,
Over the bridge, around the bend,
Taking me for a ride.

The train is rolling down the track,
Listen to the wheels go clickety clack,
Over the bridge, around the bend,
Taking me for a ride.

Love that one Sod Buster.

Heard this one this mornin' afore work, heard it last Sunday on a show where they were talkin' to Ian Anderson, that one was a live version from about a year ago, Ol' boy still sounds good and so does his flute.

In the shuffling madness
of the locomotive breath,
runs the all-time loser,
headlong to his death.
"Oh" He feels the piston scraping --
steam breaking on his brow --
old Charlie stole the handle and
the train "it" won't stop going --
no way to slow down. "OhooOh"

He sees his children "jumping" off
at the stations -- one by one.
His woman and his best friend --
in bed and having fun.
"Oh" He's crawling down the corridor
on his hands and knees --
old Charlie stole the handle and
the train "it" won't stop going --
no way to slow down. "Heaheya"

He hears the silence howling --
catches angels as they fall.
And the all-time winner
has got him by the balls.
"Oh" He picks up Gideons Bible --
open at page one --
I "THINK" God "he" stole the handle and
the train "it" won't stop going --
no way to slow down.
"no way to slow down
no way to slow down
no way to slow down
no way to slow down"

Del, that's the best song on Aqualung.  They have a live album called "Bursting Out" with a great version.  They also do "A New Day Yesterday" at that concert, my other JT favorite.

Ahh, the concert piano switching to blues with guitar accomaniment then on the last note that distortion kicks in.

Bouree' on Stand Up was a great one for the flute.  The band members were all classicly trained and would switch instraments in mid concert just to show all of then could all play everything equaly as well.

The old Rocker wore his hair too long,
wore his trouser cuffs too tight.
Unfashionable to the end --- drank his ale too light.
Death's head belt buckle --- yesterday's dreams ---
the transport caf' prophet of doom.
Ringing no change in his double-sewn seams
in his post-war-babe gloom.

Now he's too old to Rock'n'Roll but he's too young to die.

He once owned a Harley Davidson and a Triumph Bonneville.
Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs
and prays that he always will.
But he's the last of the blue blood greaser boys
all of his mates are doing time:
married with three kids up by the ring road
sold their souls straight down the line.
And some of them own little sports cars
and meet at the tennis club do's.
For drinks on a Sunday --- work on Monday.
They've thrown away their blue suede shoes.

Now they're too old to Rock'n'Roll and they're too young to die.

So the old Rocker gets out his bike
to make a ton before he takes his leave.
Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be.
And as he flies --- tears in his eyes ---
his wind-whipped words echo the final take
and he hits the trunk road doing around 120
with no room left to brake.

And he was too old to Rock'n'Roll but he was too young to die.
No, you're never too old to Rock'n'Roll if you're too young to die.

Although I never could sing worth a lick, I always felt close to this one.

Charlie and Band

Old Rock 'n' Roller
He's just an old rock 'n' roller playing music in a backstreet bar.
He sings a little flat and he never learned to play the guitar.
But he keeps on belting out them rhythm and blues,
"Long Tall Sally" and "Blue Suede Shoes".
He never faced the fact that he's never gonna be a star.
He's just an old rock 'n' roller playing music in a backstreet bar.

He had a record in the sixties, it was big enough to go Top Ten.
And though he tried and he tried he never could make it happen again.
He's been living twenty years on bourbon and pride.
Jerry Lee went crazy and Elvis died.
Then his third wife left him but he never really thought it would last.
And now she ain't nothing but another little blast from the past.

But sometimes at night when the music and the crowd is having fun,
He steps up on the mike with a gleam in his eye and once again he's twenty-one.
And then it's "Be-Bop-A-Lula" and "Heartbreak Hotel" and "That'll Be The Day"
Then the Sweet Bird of Youth just flies away.

He's an earthbound eagle that never did learn how to fly.
He ain't never gonna make it but he sure did give it a try.
So go dye your hair and turn the music up loud,
And when it's time to go at least you'll go down proud.
You ain't never gonna be nothing but what you are
Just an old rock 'n' roller playing music in a backstreet bar.
Just an old rock 'n' roller playing music in a backstreet bar.

I like this one and as I get older I kinda identify with it

  Pencil thin mustache
By: jimmy buffett
1974

Now they make new movies in old black and white
With happy endings, where nobody fights
So if you find yourself in that nostalgic rage
Honey, jump right up and show your age

Chorus:
I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
The boston blackie kind
A two toned ricky ricardo jacket
And an autographed picture of andy devine

I remember bein buck-toothed and skinny
Writin fan letters to sky king and penny
Oh I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too

Then its bandstand, disneyland, growin up fast
Drinkin on a fake i.d.
Yeah, and rama of the jungle was everyones bawana
But only jazz musicians were smokin marijuana
Yeah, I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too

Then its flat top, dirty bob, coppin a feel
Grubbin on the livin room floor (so sore)
Yeah, they send you off to college, try to gain a little knowledge,
But all you want to do is learn how to score

Yeah, but now Im gettin old, dont wear underwear
I dont go to church and I dont cut my hair
But I can go to movies and see it all there
Just the way that it used to be

Chorus:
Thats why I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
The boston blackie kind
A two-toned ricky ricardo jacket
And an autographed picture of andy devine

Oh, I could be anyone I wanted to be
Maybe suave errol flynn or the sheik of araby
If I only had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could do some cruisin too

Coda:
Yeah, bryl-cream, a little dabll do yah
Oh, I could do some cruisin too

They were showing a lot of Randold Scott movies on the Westerns channel this weekend, so this one popped into my head:

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO RANDOLPH SCOTT
(Don Reid / Harold Reid)
The Statler Brothers - 1973

Everybody knows when you go to the show
You can't take the kids along
You've gotta read the paper
And know the code of GPG and R and X
And you gotta know what the movie's about
Before you even go
Tex Ritter's gone and Disney's dead
And the screen is filled with sex

Whatever happened to Randolph Scott
Ridin' the train alone
Whatever happened to Gene and Tex
And Roy and Rex, The Durango Kid
Oh, whatever happened to Randolph Scott
His horse plain as could be
Whatever happened to Randolph Scott
Has happened to the best of me

Everybody's tryin' to make a comment
About our doubts and fears
True Grit's the only movie
I've really understood in years
You gotta take your analyst along
To see if it's fit to see
Whatever happened to Randolph Scott
Has happened to the industry

Whatever happened to Johnny Mack Brown
And Alan Rocky Lane
Whatever happened to Lash LaRue
I'd love to see them again
Whatever happened to Smiley Burnette
Tim Holt and Gene Autry
Whatever happened to all of these
Has happened to the best of me
Whatever happened to Randolph Scott
Has happened to the industry
