Bandoleer Holster for my 51 R-M
« on: January 30, 2007, 10:02:54 AM »
I recently purchase one of Cimarron's beauiful 51 Richards Mason revolvers and wanted a nice comfortable rig for it.  I like a cross draw but am a bit oversized at the mid section.  I had built a similar bandoleer shoulder holster rig for my 1860 a while back and really like the comfort and fast access to the gun.  Hence this rig.
I did a variation tool pattern from a holster in Packing Iron (page 80, top right). Leather weight is 10 oz.  The holster being a slim Jim type didn't give me enought area for a  suitable lower attach point so I made the band  with upper and lower D rings.  The lower ring used for securing to my belt if needed. I use a short piece of bungee cord to allow some stretch. The bandoleer holds 15 .38 special cartridges.

Looks great, pard. I like the wider border design, it looks nice on the black holsters. I'll have to think about something like that for my next pair of slimjims. Good work.

Beauty gunleather, eh!  Reminds me summat of the "huckleberry" or El Paso Saddlery's "Doc Holiday" model.

Thanks for the comments gents.   I have photos of the rig Val Kilmer wore in Tombstone and the one from El Paso Saddlery and it's worn quite differently.  Mine is worn like a bandoleer across the chest.  I should have taken some photos of it being worn. I built a replica of Kilmers rig from the book "Tombstone, the guns and gear."  When they said it was a pain to adjust and get right, and they were correct.  Too many straps.  I like mine because I can just throw it on and if needed attach the lower cord to my belt and I'm ready.  No muss, no fuss. Thanks again for the comments.
