I got some lead shot for sale
« on: January 27, 2007, 04:04:42 PM »
Howdy,

I been hearing how folks are having a time finding lead shot, at any price, let alone at a decent price.

A couple of local pards have been busy making shot for local sale, but they hadn't been offering to ship it.

So I went and bought 200 lbs (plus 50 for me) today.  I got an ad in the classifieds (misc) for fifty lb lots if anybody needs shot.  It's really nice 7.5 shot.

Howdy, AJ!

Is it hard lead like the commercial stuff?  Or perhaps wheelweight hardness or softer?

Inquiring minds need to know.

AFAIK it is made from WW.  It is dropped into brake fluid then washed and graphite coated.  I just tried to test a couple of em VS "West Coast premium magnum shot".  Might be a hair softer, but it's hard to tell.

Thanks.  I'm looking for old-style pure (or nearly) lead.  WW dropped in fluid will end up harder than I need.

Thanks

Yer home made shot will always be harer than dead soft lead.  These days, I doubt anybody is using a shot drop chimney :)

Steel Horse,

You might try your local plumbing supply wholesaler for some pure lead.  When my dad cast bullets, he wanted 10 to 1 lead & tin, IIRC, and he got both from the plumbing supply place.  I imagine that Indian-NO-place has a couple of scrap metal buyers and they may have some old lead pipe that would fill your need as well.  Good hunting!!

Delmonico Pard, that's a great shot.

FWIW, I've got one of the old Littleton shot makers.  It only has Four spouts, but it will make a LOT of good shot fast.  I use only ww metal in it cuz lead don't make as uniform pellets.  Also, the ww metal shot seems to pattern a little tighter.

Not all of my shot is round and not all exactly the same size, but I've loaded for the trap league and the shooters kept beggin' for more.  Seems that the patterns were just right for trap use.  I've killed partridge with it and rabbits and stuff, but I prefer nickel plated buffered shot when I'm hunting.

  AJ,

Do you have any ideal what shipping on a 100 pounds would be to Virginia?   Any deal on a ton picked up there?

I haven't got a ton, AAMOF, as we speak I only have 150 lbs left.  I pop 50 lbs in a USPS flat rate box, and include the shipping for the 50 lbs in the price.  100 lbs would take two boxes, so yer looking at $120 shipped.
