Book on S&W American Model
« on: January 15, 2007, 08:45:14 PM »
Wow, I picked up the new book by Charles Pate, "Smith & Wesson American Model" this weekend at a local gun show and just had a chance to leaf through it...I heartily recommend it to this forum.  It looks like it is choc full of information on the model 3 and its development, including lots of stuff I never heard about - like a prototype break top American that worked very much like the Merwin Hulbert!  See pg 174 when you get the book.

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for an affordable, shootable American model or first model Russian, but no luck yet.  Maybe Uberti will see fit to bring one out someday...here's hoping they do it right it this time, with a gas seal cylinder and no mixing of features like they did with the Laramie...

Anyone got some pics of their American(s) they'd like to share??

I'll have to try to find the book.  I agree with you about the no mixing thing.  Although I would prefer it in 44 Russian instead of the heeled 44 American.

That Pate book also covers the S&W Schofield and Russian models, too.

Check out this link:  http://www.joesalter.com/

When you get to the home page, over on the left side at the top, click on "New Arrivals" and the two #s you are looking for are 5465 & 5466, and these should be near the middle of the first page.  The Schofield 1st Model sold for almost $10,000.00 and the Russian 3rd Model for about $3,000.00.

Nice looking S&W models.
