USFA Barrel, Cylinder, and Throat Demensions
« on: August 07, 2006, 04:31:46 PM »
Gents:
I have a USFA Rodeo .45LC that I use as an outdoors/field gun, I do not shoot CAS. I am reloading Lyman 454190 cast bullets with 35 grains FFFg Elephant Powder for my standard field load.
It was suggested that Use .454 Dia. bullets rather than the .452 Dia that I am currently using because I am shooting a "colt Clone", although I am having no problems with accuracy...My Rodeo shoots better than I.
So from those who know, Are the demensions of the Rodeo the modern demensions that do best with the .452's, or should I go with the old time .454's?

I'm shooting .452 bullets and all 6 of the USFA"S shoot where I point them.

They, the USFA's, also shoot factory ammo into reasonable groups 2 inches plus+ or minus,   at 15 measured yards.

My 6 rodeos throat diamentions are .452 and shoot  groups with .452 lead bullets of  1.09 inches at 15 yards at about 800 FPS using clays powder.

I also get 1 1/2 inch groups shooting my cowboy loads of 200gr or 180 gr  bullet in a schofield case with  light loads of Trailboss powder

I just purchased a new SAA Colt 45 and the cylinder throat dimensions are .456 with with a .451 bore and I had to go to .454 bullets to get accuracy.    it now get 1.09 inch  repeatable groups at 15 measured yards. (  I casted my own .456 keith style bullets then sized them to .454)

The Colt factory stated the throat tolerences are .454-.460

There is a however. My colt won't shoot factory ammo with a .452 lead or JHP ammo. It gets  4-5 inch groups at a measured 15 yards.

452 cast bullets are easier to find and work great in my USFA's

All groups are shot from a sandbag rest and at 15 measured yards.

If you are getting the accuracy you want with the ,452 bullets stay with them you will gain nothing going to a .454

Familydoc,
I'm back at the house now but as I remember the throat specs  are .4515 - .4525.   I'll check that in the morning.   It's morning and those are the specs we use.

Unlike Colt, USFA and Ruger have gotten the throat dimensions on the cylinders the right size for shooting .451-.452" sized bullets, so any bullet in that size should be fine.
