Using black powder with hbwc ?
« on: August 04, 2006, 11:31:27 AM »
Well I bout got the tools gathered up for the job this weekend. Going to drill, tap and sand out the loading slot on my 51 pietta. Got to talking about loading the hbwc's in my 38's when a pard asked how was I going to lube them. Well that stumped me.
Never seen a wad cutter with any lube grooves. I'm strickly a black powder shooter so I reckon I'm gonna have to come up with a regular hollow base bullet that has lube grooves. Who makes these kind of molds at a reasonable price? I use almost nothing but Lee molds except for my 45/70 and Lee doesn't offer a hollow base 38. Any ideas?

If you load one of the subs, 777, APP, Pyrodex or Pinnacle, you shouldn't need any lube. If you shoot the real stuff you might have to go with a grease cookie.

I've shot the Hornady HBWC in the .38 longs with 777 without any problem.  They are lubed with a wax of some kind.  For BP you could use either a grease cookie or fill the bases with the liquid alox from Lee and let it dry.

You might want to look into a prelubicated wadcutter that Midway sells.

It is the: Hornady Prelubricated 38 Caliber (.358) 148 Grain Lead Hollow Base Wadcutter, Midways Item # is 287589.

I have used them and they are a good bullet and requires no extra lube.

Good Luck on your Installation.

Hope this info helps.

Warbucks16,

I will soon be facing the same situation.  Have you used these bullets with real BP, not the substitues?  If this bullet, with this lube will hold up for several stages shooing BP this will solve the problem with 38 Long Colt conversions and their oversized bores.

Thanks for any input that you have.

Well my Pietta Remington liked the Pyrodex P but hated fffg Goex , but my Uberti 51's love goex and hate Pyrodex. This is a pietta so hopefully it'll like the Pyrodex and their won't be a problem. Keep ya posted. Thanks

Hell-er High Water:

Yes I have used these for quite a while. As long as you keep the cylinder pin lubricated with gun butter or a good non petroleum lubricant you can fire 3 or 4 cylinders full, wipe the parts down and start all over.

I believe that these are available in swc also but have not tried them.

One odd thing I ran into, was my converted Uberti's liked the 125 gr 38 bullet as much a the HBWC.  They should have rattled down the barrel, but I could even hit the rifle targets with them.

Andrew, interesting!  Bet you could get lots more Black Powder in a .38 case with a hollow base WC, maybe seated high and used in pistol only.  Lube shouldn't be a problem in a short barrel.  P'raps my old boxes of target bullets could prove useful again.

Goatlips I shoot 45's in my rifle so seating them a little long won't be a problem. A pard I was talking to today at our monthly shoot said we can't shoot the wc's. I know the rule say's round nose but why not the wc's too?

Andrew, last I heard any lead bullet that sticks out of the case is legal.  Just got to seat them a little high for CAS.  Never seen a rule that says round nose, just looks more cowboy.  But I've been wrong....

WC are legal, they just can't be seated below the lip of the cartridge.  I seat mine out about a quarter of the bullet length to get a full 15 grains in the .38 LC.  There's always someone who knows a rule, ask to see it in the BOOK.

I use the regular Lee dies.  They were .38 special, so I grounded the bottom of the mouth flairing die.  I use a .38 factory crimp die because the bullets do not have a crimp groove.

The HBWC's with either a lubed felt wad...or base packed with stiff BP lube sure didn't know they weren't supposed to work in my Pa's NM Remignton's  ???
Another trick is to dip the exposed bullet in melted lube (after loading, folks) and allow to cool. This method works well, but limits carrying of the ammo to the loading table in factory-type protective boxes.

YMMV!

Why not just buy and load heel base boolits?  http://www.gadcustomcartridges.com/ This feller has all the makens and expertise. Nice feller reasonable cost and he also has pre loaded ammo.  ;D

if'n I go with the heeled type bullet I'll have to use the 38 long colt cases and loading dies correct?

Problem for me is I might be shooting just one conversion and the other gun is a regular 38. To me two types of ammo for two guns is a hassel.

I use a Rapine hollow base mould and it cast a round nose flat point 165 grain bullet with lube gruves.  I can't remember the number but it looks just like the bullets sold by Taylors.  Shoots very well and with 16 grains of Swiss there's no suggestion of "Brokeback" loads ;D

Howdy Gents,

I am just starting out in this field but I bought my 148gr HBRN bullet mold from  "Old West Bullet Molds"  970-858-1449. Proprietors Name is Bernie. He hs a great product at a reasonable price and I recieved my mold in the mail about 3 weeks after I ordered it.  Not bad for a custom made piece.
