"New" Rifle
« on: December 16, 2004, 09:36:45 AM »
Here is my "new" rifle. It is a 1895 Marlin .45-70 Govt made in 1978 with microgroove rifling. It had one previous owner. It is in 95+% condition. I can't wait to shoot some DD/PRS 400gr pills in it.  ;D

Howdy Silver Creek Slim,

I have one of those rifles, from that era. I put a Leupold scope on it for a while. It would shoot groups into 1" @ 100 yards, benched-off sandbags, using the scope and factory Remington 405 soft points. Wish I could say I could do that with iron sights<G>. I tried black powder loads with lead bullets that I used in my Trapdoor, but it would lead up the barrel after about three shots. If I were to try lead bullets again, I would use ones from Laser-Cast that are much harder than those I experimented with. I hope you end up liking your rifle as much as I like mine.

Great looking rifle Slim  :D.  I am still holding out to buy a Cowboy version of that rifle.  I have heard that soft lead in micro-grooved bores are a no-no.  As steve suggested I would use gas-checked hard cast boolets with BP.  Enjoy the new toy and give us a holler on how she shoots!  Happy Holidays  ::)!

Thanks, pards. But, I won't be able to play with it until it warms up a bit outside 'cuz my hand will freeze to the lever.  :( I am going to put a laddle sight on it so I can shoot it past 200 yds.  ;D

That is the reason I moved from the Great White North to Texas.  Used to go out and shoot over christmas break and freeze!

Had one of those rifles. Just keep the speed down slow and you can shoot what you want.

Have fun with your rifle!! Great Lookin Rifle by the way.
