WWE, they shoot a couple of times a year to 1000 at Sacto. Check on bpcr.net for range schedules.

Ranch 13.

Thanks for the tip .... my now-retired FFL likes to shoot .50 Snyper 'black gun' stuff and was gonna try out with him .... he also has a .45-70 'Quigley' and I would be happy with whatever hs shows up with .... he is a consummate gentleman and time spent in his company is aways fun ...

I can't help you on the sights but my eyes are no were near what they were 40 years ago! However, the ammo part is simple enough my friend, you just load your own. You can purchase your lead bullet of choice by the 1000 or more, this saves money in the long run and powder in the 4-lb containers like I do. I end up loading my ammo for about a 1/3 or less and have better loads producing better groups down range also. I have a Pederosoli 1874 Sharps in 45/120 and a John Bodine Rolling Block in the 45/90 caliber.

Good for you thar Ellis! Yep, I did a little bit of the Hobo style livin myself some years back ridin the rails! It was more than exciting at first but it sure had it's draw backs too. I spent some very cold nights and wet sometimes as well. Praise the Lord my rainbow came around 2 years later. ;)  ;D

Hi,

I finally have a 'real' buffalo gun!

I ordered and recieved the #103 Rear Soules Styke site from MVA ... and now I gotta wait until after Christmas to shoot it.

And as far as reoading goes, a friend in SASS is retired and supplements his income with reloading ... he presently does all my  cartridges, and says that if I supply the brass, he will reload for me for about  a dollar a shell ... not exactly chicken feed but a heck of a lot cheaper than I could buy ot the door of a retail place ... and he has the Lyman 457132 and will load it as I wish .... and her is a pic of the completed rifle:

That Browning sight is in the thick of the good sights, it's not MVA quality, but they do work well and are solid, maybe a bit overpriced for the quality but not by alot.

Hi,

I am as new as Capt Dan Blodgett so I will refrain and allow someone with experience to give his opinion.

Has anyone ever used sites from Kelley?

Hi,

Well, the range report is nada ... I have 50.45-70 shells that have been built up for me ... I am simply waiting for my ex FFL (his children now run the business) to email me back with a date ...

He has been shooting long distance for a long, long time ... he has an old Quigby Down Under Sharpes .45-110. He also has a spotting scope that I will use... I still have get a scope and  to hobble some sticks together .... the Possibles Shop has them for sale at a good price, but my pride (and a fixed income) just won't let me buy these things.

That and a good spotting scope should get me going ... and if I like it as much as I think I will, a range box made to fit the scope would be in the must have list ... which means getting a box joint jig from Woodcrafters .... and on and on ...

http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2003182/1585/Woodsmith-Aluminum-Box-Joint-Jig.aspx

But here is a pic of the rifle as it lies ....

Am thinking a trip to ace hardware for a 1/4 x 20 screw, wing nut and 3 flat washers would do.  A couple of biggish nails, a little glue
Any old hard wood dowel some where a round 9/16 to 3/4 or maybe as larges as 1 inch and an old belt or other strip of leather and you would be in business.

I may well make my shooting sticks out of some old hockey sticks I have laying around.  If I wanted to be cute, would leave the blades as part of the sticks

At 50 or 100 yards, where you will probably work on getting groups first a spotting scope helps, but with anything from about 2 power up you can see 45 caliber holes.  Any binos you might have will work just fine.

I will hit the range with my sharps tomorrow and test some loads using a Seaco 645 480 grain bullet sized to .459 seated out to touch lands.  68.2 with .045 and .107 compression and 70.2 grains with .115 and .187 compression.

Using smokeless (varget) I was able to put 9 415 gr desparados sized .460 in about 3 inches at 100 last week.

WaddWatsonEllis,

Since you already have a tablesaw you can make a box joint jig.  Fun project and pretty easy.

I made this box with the Shopnotes Box Joint Jig...no need to spend $110 on one.

Here's a short writeup on the jig.  If you're interested PM me your email address and I'll send the plans to you.

WWE,

Made these shooting sticks this afternoon with some walnut and knobs I had.  Just need to get some spikes for the feet and leather for the barrel for 'em.  Also going to make a bench version.
