Went to look at that sheriffs model that I asked you guys about in a previous post, Il like it a lot ,don't    know if I like it enough to fork over $2800. While talking with the guy he pulls out 2 more boxes, first one is a rodeo, which I'm not crazy about, but at a really good price. The second one he called an Ainsworth , looked like the earlier rust process[ not an expert here] , ser# 66xx. My question is how does one tell the difference between an Ainsworth with antique finish and a Custer gun.
  Please excuse my newbie questions.
Thanks,
  Mark

Should be marked which model on the box label. I always regretted not picking up a CCH/BB Ainsworth "Inspector Series" model to compliment my "Custer". :(

USFA never did a Custer with a special serial number.  "Special" numbers within the Ainsworth range could be ordered.  Perhaps the most unusual would be a Custer with 1876 serial number.

There was a dealer in Oregon that ordered Inspector series guns in other than 45LC.  That didn't last long as finally USFA said no more

Great to see your posts, Gary! 1876 went to Mike V. as I recall. What a great serial number  :).
Thanks for all the great customer service you provided !!!

WWYS,
Your Ainsworth makes me drool !!! Just the kind of "reunion" I had in my mind.  :)
I haven't completely given up hope....but... My consumable income seems to be mostly consumed, when jewels like that show up !
