Two Flints,

When, and if, you get the chance, I would very much appreciate it if you could tell me what information is available from the SRS Books regarding a Model 1860 rifle serial number 4980 and a Model 1860 carbine serial number 18573. I realize that you cannot vouch for the accuracy of any information that you provide.

As always, thanks!
Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm sure you've read my detailed disclaimer, and everyone else who may read with "reservation" my findings . . .  :-X :-X

. . . in my SRS books I find a Spencer Carbine with serial # 18568, issued to a member of Company L, 2nd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry in 1864 (no month and day given) . . . (close to your serial # 18573).

. . . in my SRS books I find a Spencer Rifle with serial # 4985, issued to a member of Company A, 72nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry, AND a Spencer Rifle with serial # 4973 issued to a member of Company G, (same) 72nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry on May 15, 1863 . . . (close to your serial # 4980)  A good number of serial # Spencers higher and lower than your # 4980 were also issued to the same unit.
