'73 with a 30' barrel 45LC. tried big lubes , but still get hard fouling in the last 12" of the barrel. Only success I have had was lube cookies. Any suggestions for a good BP bullet/lube? I think I probably need to go to something like Swiss powder to cure the problem.  Opinions?

Roosterman,

I know that the PRS "Big Lube" bullet carries 2.5 grs of lube which is quite a bit.  I also use a .45 bullet that carries less lube (1.6 grs) that runs fine for many shots in a 24" barrel using Goex powder with no hard fouling in 60%+ humidity. I use SPG lube mostly.

A few questions....
What lube are you using now?
Humidity?
Powder brand & charge weight?

Roosterman, I have an Uberti 1873 in .44WCF with a 30 inch barrel.  I use Dan T's lube, which is (by volume) 4 parts beeswax, 2 parts canola oil and 2 parts anhydrous lanolin.  For warmer weather vary it to 5 parts beeswax, 3 parts canola oil and 2 parts lanolin. Melt it in a double boiler and pan lube my bullets.

I use an Accurate moulds bullet as well as one designed by Bernie at Old West Bullet Moulds.  Both carry a lot of lube.

You can find bulk beeswax and bulk lanolin at EBay.

My rifle works fine through all five stages of CAS matches, with no cleaning in between and no loss of accuracy.  I have a greasy ring on my muzzle.

I live in Colorado where there is very little humidity and the summers are hot.

Good luck!

I don't have a 30" barrel right now, but I did own a Trapdoor that had an even longer barrel (was it 34"). I used and continue to use, SPG for all my lubing and I had no problems in the Trapdoor. I have noticed a little bit of fouling the last few inches on some of my old guns, probably a function of how much lube different bullets carry. One thing I do sometimes is to run a rag of my homemade lube through the barrel before the first shot. This presents a ready-lubed barrel for the first bullet down the barrel (which I suspect is the greatest culprit). My home made lube recipe is approximately 50% lanolin and 50% caster oil, both available at the local drug store. It is too runny for a bullet lube, but makes an excellent bore or case lube.
