Pards, I spent the 1st day of my vacation today driving down the river to buy a used Marlin 1894 .357 cal. I was able to get a good price on it since it * had* a scope mounted on it. Selling the scope to fella at work. I did not notice when I made the deal that the loading gate does not return properly. Should this be a concern? Can it be a home repair? Or do I need to leave it with one of the CAS gunsmith's? Any Ideals from anyone sure enuff appeariated.

Litl Rooster,

First check the loading gate screw (loading spring screw).  Make sure it is tightened up well.  Marlin's don't have a seperate loading gate spring, the loading gate itself is the spring.  In fact, the loading gate is refered to as the loading spring in schematics.  As long at the loading gate is whole and the screw is present, you should be in business.  If either of them are missing or damaged, go to Brownells.com and purchase either  550-114-594 (the loading spring for $12.06) or 550-301-591 (the loading spring screw for $2.73).  That should put you back in business.

Sincerely,

Prof. A. Wickwire

Thank You Prof. The loading gate(loading spring) is intact, I will take it downstairs and see if i can get it right. Seems to me Brownells is the only link I don't have in my Computer for access. I haven't bought from them in years, no paticular reason. I guess I ought to add them in. Your help and help from others here is why I spend so much time here. Even when problems don't directly concern me, I'll read them just to see if I can learn something.  Thanks again

I had the loading gate screw snap when I tightened mine so you might want to torque it carefully. Was actually on the phone with Marlin today and they are sending me a new screw.  I asked if this was a common occurence and the answer was a contrite no.

Say, li'l Rooster, how'd ya' make out with that "loading gate" problem?  Had the one on my 94CS go wonky on me one time in the middle of a stage, and had to take the whole dang gun apart (almost), to get it back right.  So, when you get things all ready to go back together, consider using a drop of blue LocTite on that screw, and try to remember to keep an eye on it and check it once in a while.
