They're your guns - and they're reproductions - so it's doubtful you'd be hurting the value, so long as the barrels are cut and re-crowned and the front sight installed properly.

Sgt Eli,

Here's a photo of an original schofield with the barrel cut to 4.5".
The short barrel makes it easier to handle. IMHO.

Hey Sgt ,
I don't know if that pair might have been mine, but we were on the same posse at the Missouri state shoot a few years back and you did look 'em over.
They're cut at 4 1/2 inches. Handle really well. Sweeeeet.   8)
Somewhere around this forum there's a picture of 'em. Joss had posted several photos of member's guns and mine were in that bunch. It may be archived somewhere.  Ya might check with Joss if you want to see the photo.

I'd say Go For It .   ;D

Sgt. Eli

Cocklebur....YES those are the ones. Beautiful pair of guns....you had the "accidental" antler grips on them. ;D I've never forgotten them.

Sgt. Eli

Just a lookin' for a hacksaw ;D

Of course when I first got these my pard Deadman Walking wanted me to promise i wouldn't cut the barrels off....I kinda got a reputation for that.

I've got a photo of an original cut-down "Russian."  If I knew how to post a picture, I would.

It was on one of the on line auctions a while back.  I saved the pic as evidence and possible future inspiration.

A few years back, I shot on a posse with a pard out at the Tin Star Ranch north of Fredericksburg, Texas, who had a cut-down pair of Russians.  They were good-lookin' and he shot rather well with them!  Go for it!  I think you'll really like them!

Sgt. Eli

Well since I checked my Russians and one has a 6 1/2" barrel and the other a 7" barrel....they is definetly gitting chopped! ;D

I had mine cut to 5"... while I was at it, I polished the lumps above the grips and removed the trigger guard spurs..

here's a pic of  the first one of 'em.

Thanks much ,  Irish Dave.

Only problem I can think of is that no one thinks they're 44 Russians.

That and the fact that they might not be allowed at nat'l matches.

Well.

1) The barrels lengths shouldn't matter.
2) There's plenty of documentation for trigger guard spur removal in the Old West, so that really shouldn't matter.
3) I can see where the knuckle situation might be a problem, though.

yeah, that's what I wouldve guessed.  Although with them set up this way, they've been mistaken for pre-Schofield S&Ws.

here are some original examples next to each other... I think the bottom is a 44 American.

Hope y'all are having a great New Year so far.

I bought my 1st Russian when they were in earlier Uberti production.  The triggerguard spur was induction welded (?) on, and broke off the second time I shot the gun.  I polished off the rough spot from the weld and blued the spot with a torch.  I believe Uberti either has improved the weld now, or made a new mold with the spur integral..

Anyway, a Russian without the spur is not uncommon, repro or original.  Removing the lanyard ring also makes it easier to shoot.
