Joined corrections at the tender age of 36! Worked for the first 9 1/2 years in maximum security worming my way up through the ranks, then promoted to a rank equivalent to Lieutenant, moved to a variable security institution. Returned to max as an acting Deputy Governor/Warden I suppose you guys would call it (too old to promote any further, handy if they had problems it seems. Spent the last four years or so travelling as an acting Deputy, ended up as a Command Tactician, in rge of matters tactical and intel for a big slice of the state. Coordinated 20+ field intelligence officers, etc ensured compliance with security programs for twelve jails, ensured day to day incidents in the command were handled promptly and correctly (acted a bit like a spin doctor, but was centred on getting things to work properly, not cover tracks) best job I ever had! Moved back as a deputy /security manager of a jail and my wife took real ill (so did I, been dodging the doctor for years) and was medically retired in late October (after 22 1/2 years). Now a full time driver/carer/cook/coffee maker/housekeeper, etc.

I have been a bit busy and haven't been on the board lately, missed you guys.

After my wife passed away last year, I got called up by the Commisssioner to assist the Department as he put it. I travel aroud the state, reviewing gaols (thats how we spell jails), working out how they are going wrong and making recommendations as to how they can fix it. Just what the guys at the caol face want to hear, how to run their jails, NOT! I don't care, the money's good and I have been able to buy a few toys. Another 6 months and I will have put enough away to travel to EOT!

Just an update!
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!

I started in Corrections in 2001 and absolutely love it!!! They'll have to pull me out of there with a tractor and a chain.

Started my career a little late. I was an automotive mechanic for almost twenty years and ended that career as a Master ASE certified tech.

I worked patrol for about nine years then promoted to detective. Worked narcs for about two and a half years and then transferred to major crimes. Promoted to patrol sergeant and did that for about two and a half years. New Sheriff and a bump back to major crimes. Been with the unit for about seven years. I have a long way to go before I'm ready for retirement (financially). Was a countersniper for ten years and am a member of our clan lab team.

I too started late in life, spent 21 years in Naval Aviation seeing the world from above.  Now it's riding the slab as a State Trooper.  Can't be better, be one's own boss basicly.  You go where you want to go, take a break when you want and do just about what you feel like that day.  Little paperwork and 3 day weekends every week!     ;D

Retired now, I was for 25 years a "Gentleman Investigator" or Special Agent with the Naval Investigative Service, now the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NIS/NCIS).  (Yep, pards, never a real law dog, just a suit-wearing sworn federal ossifer.)
1/1976 - 11/1978 Hired in San Diego, assigned to general criminal investigations at Miramar Naval Air Station/Balboa Naval Hospital
11/78 - 01/80 Special Agent Afloat (Adrift?) USS America.  Only sworn LEO in a CVBG (Carrier Battle Group) with approx 10,000 "single" males between approx 17 yo and 45 yo.  Worked general property crimes, crimes of violence, one race riot, lots of drug cases, a few arsons, destruction of Govt property, faked death case, etc.  Worked street drug ops with Spanish Guardia Civil and muni police, Italian Cararbinieri (sp?) and Questra, Yugoslav port officials, Egyptian street cops, French Surete, and US Virgin Islands PD.
1/80 - ?/82 Tidewater VA offices, general crimes & Evidence Custodian.
?/82 - 9/83 Tidewater VA Counterintelligence squad, various duties
9/83 - 8/85  NIS Headquarters Washington DC as Terrorism Analyst/manager of Navy Anti-Terrorist Alert Center (NAVY ATAC) where I supervised one guy who was later convicted of spying for a foreign government.
8/85 - 8/88 NIS Subic Bay Philippines as CI squad leader then Assistant Regional Director for Counterintelligence
8/88 - 8/90  NIS HQ Washington program manager in Navy Info/Personnel Security/Damage Assessment Branch of the office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
8/90 - 7/92  Detailed to Director of Naval Intelligence as program manager
7/92 - 7/94  Desk pilot NCISHQ Counterintelligence Investigations Division.  After my first wife passed away, I begged out of the management track and asked for reassignment as a street hump.  Then reassigned:
7/94 - 7/97  NCIS Resident Agency London, UK, CI specialist and general crimes.  Liaison with NATO country police departments in Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburgh, and of course with the UK Police service.  Worked with some super coppers in the London Met, Thames Valley Constabulary, Devon & Cornwall, Wales, and other Constabularies.  Developed a very healthy respect for UK-style policing by consent.
7/97 - 12/2000  Detailed to US Onsite-Inspection Agency Travis AFB as CI officer, supporting START & INF Treaty inspections by Russian Federation in the western half of the the USA and some time in US Portal site in Urdmurt Republic of Russia.
12/2000 Retired from federal civil service.
In December 2000  moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to teach Counterintelligence as a contractor for the Dept of Energy.  That gig will expire probably the end of this December and I will retire once again.
It has been a very different ride than I anticipated fifty years ago when as a kid I wanted to join the NYPD.  I never did but a nephew did, and he and his brother, carry on the tradition in the NY suburbs.

1982 I went to work for a small municipality, two man force, and I did it all......everything from traffic to homicide, except for the administrative/training end.

1986 I went to work for the Fed...and I still do it all, except for the administrative end of things.

Worst things I have dealt with: One TIA and two heart attacks. I'm still kicking and still doing it all. :)

Never worked a LEO however grandfather was the first detective hired in Dade County Florida and worked till he retired. Me I never had any thoughts of being a LEO however in the 70's opened a Karate school in SE Texas that lead in a few years to working as private security for mostly the oil industry executives overseas when they traveled. That later lead to me doing contract work in late 79 to 84 for the US Government from security to courier work all over the world for a number of different agencies from US Marshall's to State Department. It was fun while it lasted until I gave it up and went back to a normal life. All of my work was overseas with non in the USA at all.

Odd that this topic should become active now. Friday is my retirement from LE, 35 years of service. Like a lot of Deputies/Police Officers I would retire into poverty except that I start a job with a Trucking Company Monday, the 7th of May. The pay and benefits are much better. I'll supervise and dispatch and kinda be their in-house security. South Texas is still a rough place.
Retiring to work in the trucking industry seems to be a very common for LEOs in Texas. I heard from an old Trooper friend of mine whose doing nearly the exact same thing I am.

Eighteen years in patrol, including nine as a patrol supervisor.  Thirteen years in SWAT.  Ten years in Detective Bureau including stints on Surveillance crew, undercover and working cold case homicides.  After retiring as a Detective Lieutenant, I worked in a smaller Department as an administrative Captain, and as a trainer for the State Police.  Now in private industry. :)

I'm new to the forum and this is an old thread but maybe some new discussion can be revised.

I was a patrol deputy, then a detective. I got into training by becoming a part time firearms instructor, then the department's chief firearms instructor and range master and a member of the academy staff my last 6 years before retiring.
