Can we finally set the record straight?

Howdy, y'all.

I've been bouncin' 'round these forums for a little bit now and realized we need to get some kind of definitive consensus on just how these smokepoles we shoot stack up to the originals. Dunno if we could make this thread a sticky or if Papa Bear would post a consolidated version on the SCORRS website, but I'm sure alot of y'all are gettin' tired of answering the same questions about authenticity, bbl length, etc. So with this in mind, I'd like to inaugurate this post with the info I've gleaned from these (and other) forums about our beloved 58 Remmies.

* Euroarms 58's are the same frame size as the original 2nd Model Beals Navy .36
* Pietta 58's are the same frame size as the original New Model Army .44
* Uberti's are somewhere in between
* Navies are .36, Armies are .44
* Neither model came with a 5.5" barrel
* Remmies didn't come with casehardened frames (even if they are purdy)

That's all I can think of so far. I may be wrong on some of this, but I don't care as long as the end result is correct.

Happy Trails,

Good summation, Brian. It's nice to see this all put in one place. The only thing I can add to that is that the loading lever on a full 8" model is different than on a 5 1/2" model. To really look period correct, the loading lever should be a cut-down one from a full length pistol.

Bruce McDowell only records one cut-down Reminton conversion at page 58.  The rammer was not cut down which left a 6 3/4" barrel.  I had my Pietta done the same way.

Thats not to say that shorter barrels didn't exist, only that they never survived in a collection that Bruce had knowledge of!

I don't care.... If there's anything prettier than a 5 1/2" CCH tuned up Uberti 58; it's my wife!!

About ten years ago I saw an original NM Army .44 in a gunshop in San Jose.  It had a cut dowwwn about 6 inch on it,  and original 8" barrel on the side.

I cut one of my 1858 remmie Piettas down to the 6 and 3/4 inch and added a dovetailed in front sight .. it made a good looking ,good shooting pistola .

This one is cut to 6". Great pistol. I like it better than any of my other ones.

There`s one that i didn`t see covered ..the ASM 1858 Remmie ... i have an old silver 1858 ASM remmie that takes the Uberti R&D cylinder ... I`ve seen others on here that say their ASM remmies will take the Pietta cylinder ... so whats the deal with that ?  My ASM also has a smaller grip than the Uberti`s .Larger than the Euro remmie but still smaller than a Uberti .

I don't know about that Sundance, but my Santa Barbara takes the Pietta R and D and works fine. The grip on my Santa Barbara is substantially larger than the Pietta. It fits me great.

I'm not sure about the frames, but as far as the Pietta vs. original is concerned,  the GRIP size is definately bigger on the Pietta than on a real one.  The Euroarms grip is very close to an original.

I might have to take my digital calipers to my original Remington NMA and my Pietta frames and compare...

Fox Creek Kid

Just my 2 cents worth but every original I've ever handled seemed exactly like a Pietta. The Uberti is a tad smaller & the Euroarms smaller yet. Naturally, every original was hand finshed so as to be some variation from grip to grip.

Well i wish it was ..but it ain`t just the originals that have the grips fitted to each gun ... try buying a set of finished grips from VTI and see how well they don`t fit ...lol  the finished set i bought were 1/8 off in places had to strip`em down and refinish after i trimmed to fit ..won`t order finished grips ever again . they cost me 35 bucks and i could have bought an unfinished set from Dixie for 5 bucks .

Thanks Sundance,
I've been wanting to do a dress-up on the Remingtons but didn't want to drop the $35/gun on new stocks. I just ordered two pair from Dixie.

Nozzle glad my bad experience was some way helpful ...let us know what the Dixie unfinished grips look like .  I know ya can`t beat the price .
