Has anyone done any 45/70 loading with goex 3f ..or is the 2f a main stay . I uasually only load 60grs of 2f behind my 405 gr bullet loads .. just wondering if there would be any benifits useing the 3f .

I have used both powder sizes and found the 3F was a little less accurate in my TD barrel relined carbine. Every time I try out a new bullet or mold I try both sizes of powder. The 2F seems to work a little better.

Ho far ya goin' with that boolit?  I've found that at 1000 yards the 45-70 needs all the omph it kin get.  63 grains of Swiss wasn't too much under the DD 45-500 boolit last weekend.

Dick i shoot just as far as i can see .... uasually no more than 200 yards ..lol   .I`m really just working up a good hunting load for deer and hogs .  I`ve started casting the original hollow base bullets .459 dia and she shoots real tight groups out to 200 yards haven`t tried any thing further . I wasn`t happy at all with the .458 hard cast bullets plumb sloppy in my Buffalo Classic . but the .459 soft lead i cast .. fixed all that .. she`s a keeper now . I do put a card under the hollow base too .. heard some say this wasn`t good .. but my rifle seems to like it .I was just a little worried the 3f goex would be a little fast burning for the 32 inch barrel .

Ho Sundance,

I was shootn' with shooters that were duplexing FFFg swiss with heathen smokeyless in a 45-90 last weekend.  I'm not goin' that route, but their pressures were fine.

I did, however, learn of an all BP duplex load that seems to hold promise.  They were puttin' 2/3 FFg under 1/3 FFFg.  The theory was that the last powder would burn quicker and keep the pressure more constant all the way out the tube.  Could have merit and certainly ought to be safe.

Also, the current trend is away from magnum primers and enlarged flash holes.  De-burring the holes is encouraged, but leave 'em the original size.  Then, for primers, a lot of shooters are moving to Large Pistol primers.  They are claiming better consistancy.  Your mileage may vary.

So, now you have some new ideas to factor into your load development.  As if you didn't have enuf already???

I tried to run some FFFG there for a while trying to get more MPH out of my Elephant powder which I'm told is just plain slow. I didn't like the sharp, unpleasant recoil and the accuracy really went South in a hurry. I'm back to FFG. Just came in from tossing twenty rounds downrange using DD's big boolit and Pearl. Velocities stayed real consistent and turned in a group at 100 that went just over 2 1/2". That's about all I can get out of these 64 yr old eyeballs. I'd be interested in hearing what kinds of velocities different guys are getting and some idea of what size groups you folks are shooting. Jwinks

I`ve always used the larg pistol primmers in my 45/70 and 45 LC loads .. never had one fail to light`em up .
from an accuracy stand point i went with different bullets instead of changeing primmers .. there`s days i can shoot 1 and 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards and there`s days i just can`t .. but thats me ..can`t blame the rifle . But the worst groups i`ve had were the .458 dia store bought bullets ... more like 4 inch groups .
The .459 hollow base bullets made me look like a sharpshooter... I`m out of the 2f goex now and i just ordered a case of the 3f so i`ll be trying this soon . I`ve always used more 3f in the past so i figure if the 45/70 likes it .. all`s well .  Haven`t even thought about duplex loads yet .. and probally won`t go there eaither .. there`s enought testing to do on the dark side to keep me busy . Dark siders are never bord . gotta luv it .
