Trail Boss is back
« on: March 06, 2017, 03:01:09 PM »
Looks like the Trail Boss drought  is definitely over. I've been seeing it here and there over the last few months then the other day my LGS called and said they had got some in. 5 lb. containers and more than I needed but took it anyway. Took him almost a year.

Yeah I had some on order with a dealer that came in recently. I should be good for a long time.

Humpff.  Trailboss.  Sure.  No BOOMBA.  NO SMOKE CLOUD.   NO FLAME.  Gets real gummy with petroleum lubricants.  Needs "Chemicals" to clean it up.  NO FUN.

NOPE!!  Not powder.  Just fizzy propellent.  Uck.

well a lot of people, including me, have used Trail Boss and liked it especially the double charge safety part.
Fortunately I have smelled the smoke and gone to the "dark side" so I no longer use the nitro powders in my guns.
Please understand there is no personal animosity for smokeless powder or those who use smokeless powder, it is just my enjoyment of shooting the real Old Time stuff in the 1860 Henry and 1860 Army revolvers.
Obviously my shooting is for fun because my competition days went away a long time ago.

Greetings My Dear Netizens -

I am gratified to see that Trailboss is becoming more available.

I myself was champfing to get some since I was somewhat concerned about 7-8 grains of Unique getting "lost" in that cavernous .45 Colt case, and using it in my Remmie Conversions  ....

Whilst waiting for Trailboss, I found the cost per cartridge was , well, remarkable....   and then research showed that Trailboss actually caused greater pressures than many other smokeless powders.

When I could not get any Trailboss I simplified my life by getting .45 Schoffield cases, settling on 7.2 gr Unique, and doing a double visual for correct amount of powder.

Being a cheapskate frugal sort, as well as a curmudgeon  lazy I probably won't get any TB this year, but
I am happy to bump this for others who want it!  ( and take the opportunity to run off at the mouth wax eloquont )

They had plenty of the big jugs on the shelves at the Great Eastern Gun Show last weekend. It was 129 for the big jugs and 16.99 for the 9oz.

I found a 5lb jug last year at the LGS. Was more than $129. :( I don't even use it for pistol calibers, but only for cast bullet loads in bottleneck rifle cartridges.

Yep I've seen it for some crazy prices the last couple years or more. Luckily we only use it in my wifes 44-40's for main match and I had a stockpile of it to hold us through.

The last I bought was 98 dollars for the 5lb jugs but that was a few years back before the scare and shortage. My guess is the 129 price range is probably where it will level out.

They had several jugs of it and more powder than I have seen in a really long time. Hopefully things are easing up for a while.

Loops? Kazzoos? Melbourne?

My Dear Maj2 , I did not know you were involvedin computer progamming and "down under" ....

I really must go back and look up that pressure data, I seem to recall some unfortunate bits (but mainly pertaining, i think, to older weaker guns .... ? )

the Cabela's in Buda Texas had plenty as well as Fehners in Gonzales, (Come and Take It) Texas plenty of powder including TB and primers.
This was last week so there should be plenty available. Looks like the powder drought has broken finally.

Just picked up the first 5 pound bottle of Trailboss I've ever seen.  $121 at my local gun shop.

There have been some comments on the Dark Siders Den that Trail Boss is some sort of a black powder substitute or can be loaded like black powder.
I posted a BIG comment in the Dark Siders Den that Trail Boss is a nitro powder and should be loaded as such. It is a high pressure propellant for the velocities it gives, but has the saving grace of being so bulky that a double charge is hardly possible.

Those comments should have been here.

ALWAYS use the recommended charges as shown in an up to date reloading manual and follow that information as if you life depended on it because it does. A lot of powders are black in color but they are not Black Powder any more than if a cat has kittens in the oven they are kittens, not biscuits.
