Uberti 1873 Slam fire issue

Good Morning

I have a Uberti 1873 sporting rifle that is now 14 months old and has never been "played with"

At the range this weekend it developed a fault that I need to fix asap.

Upon closing the action the rifle Slam fires ! not a nice experience with .357 and dangerous too

I have noticed the trigger seems floppy even with the rifle cocked

Any help would be gratefully received as the rifle is useless right now

Is it
(1) Truly slam-firing (i.e., the hammer has not dropped along w/ the bolt closing), or
(2) Is the hammer dropping upon closing?

If #1, It's a stuck/broken firing pin (should be easy to see looking at it protruding from the bolt face)
If #2, You need to get the trigger/sear interface reworked/hardened.

Neither is a major issue to fix.

The trigger is supppsed to be floppy as it is two pieces.  You have a worn sear or something is interfering with the sear resetting.  You need to check the sear surfaces on the hammer and the top part of the trigger and look for anything out of place.  Uberti surface hardens their trigger parts and once this hardening wears through the sear surfaces wear very rapidly.  If the rifle was recently taken down for cleaning the trigger spring could have been installed incorrectly.

I've never had it happen but wonder if the trigger sear spring could have broken. Or maybe the screw came loose which would also effect the lever safety.

Just to "Pile On" with Pettifogger a bit.  Another problem often seen with Uberti triggers is the trigger sear is rounded over rather than cut to the correct bevel.  It isn't necessarily a wear problem, often comes from the factory with the roundy trigger sear. 

Either/Or, the problem is with the Trigger/Hammer interface.  Needs taken apart, inspected to trash in the hammer full cock ledge as well as incorrect bevel/wear on the Full Cock Ledge and the Trigger Sear.  If you don't have ready access to a Gunsmith, contact VTI Gunparts and replace the offending part(s).
