American Pioneer Powder
« on: September 20, 2014, 08:08:23 AM »
I picked up three sealed jars of APP powder at a garage sale the other day, thought I might try it out.  Price on sticker on top said $14.95 but I paid $5.00 a jar.  Just wondering if some of you have used it before, as Iam sure many of you have. I have loaded for 40 years and had read it before but have not found many loads with it. I have used all the other black powder subtitutes but never this. I now only load Trail Boss, and 2FF Goex and Pyrodex. I know I should load it like the others, but with little or no compression, and little if no bullet lube. Just wondered what some of you men thought about it. I load for many calibers, but have started loading mostly 38 LC. and 44 Colt for my Conversions. In my 70s now and don't shoot as much anymore, but as long as Iam still here I'll be loadin and shootin.
As always Thanks Again for any help.

Reno,    Unable to obtain black powder in my area, I too found 4 cans of APP in the form of 3F Shockey's Gold. I know some folks are not fans of APP, but I've had good luck with it. I reload it in 56-50 Spencer for my 150 year old carbine. What I like about APP is it shoots well, cleans up gun and brass with just water and I can use my Redding powder throw. I also like the fact you can use smokeless bullet lube and standard primers.I load it with just slight compression and no wad. I have found if you throw your cases in water immediately after shooting and rinse them when you get home they will not stain, just dry them and reload. Just tumble lubing the bullets with Lee liquid Alox has worked  fine for me. Make sure you clean your bore of all oil and just a patch dampened with plain water now and then should keep thing running smoothly. If you use a powder throw clean it up afterwards so it doesn't get sticky. I've shot hundreds and hundreds of rounds of the stuff and I like it.  JW

Thanks for the reply J.W. Do you use a drop tube or just load loose?

I just drop it in from the powder throw and compress it slightly when seating the bullet.   JW
