Any one use Laser Cast bullets in .45 Colt?
« on: May 27, 2014, 12:23:55 PM »
A friend recently gave me 1500 of the Laser Cast, 200 grain RNFP in .452 dia. I have two USFA revolvers and one of the new Winchester/Miroku M 1873 Short Rifles, all in .45 Colt. I would like to come up with one load for all. Doesn't have to be CAS velocity stuff, but would like to keep things at traditional speeds for the handguns. I don't have any experience with Laser Cast bullets, but know that they are harder than woodpecker teeth  :o !!!
Thanks,
Sgt. Tom

The Laser Cast bullets are quite hard and in my Colt SAAs at standard (850 fps) velocities left a lot of lead in the forcing cone area and were a chore to clean.  I suspect that at higher velocities the problem would disappear, but I never loaded anything that hot.

They are much to hard for CAS.  You want a softer, more malleable bullet the will obdurate in the cylinder throat  and trap the powder gases behind it and not let those gasses slip by and cause gas cutting and leading.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

I appreciate the replies.

Guess I will try to trade them for something I can use.

Things being what they are with component availability, maybe a new bullet mold....

I shoot Laser Cast 200 grainers  thru my saa's and my 1860 Henry all the time. They work just fine. I usually load with 7.1 gr. of Titegroup, which works out to about 11,150 c.u.p. or 8.3 gr. of 231, for about 12,650 c.u.p.
Not CAS loads but comfortable loads to shoot.

I shoot any number of Laser Cast bullets from Colt and USFA guns.  200rns, 230 FP (45acp bullet that works well in the 45 Colt rifles/pistols)   and 255s in rn and swc versions.  Great bullets IMO.  Be sides the 1000s I shoot in 1911s.   I load them from lwt plinking loads to hot hunting loads depending on my needs for the day.  255s with 7 gr of Unique is a favorite lwt load.  7.5 of Unique with a 230 FP is my current combo load for the '73 and SAAs.

6.2gr of Bullseye and the 230pf is the most accurate round I have seen in my USFA guns.  Amazingly so IMO.  7gr is good as well.

I've shot several 1000 of the 200gr RN with the same charges as the heavier bullets as a test batch.  I liked the lack of recoil and think it would make a good rifle pistol combo.   But decided I didn't want to run different powder charges going for 200 to 255 so went back to the 230 for a lwt match/rifle/pistol load and just don't change the powder charge.

Easy to get, load well and generally shoot better than I do.
