July 4th Range Report
« on: July 05, 2014, 09:45:31 AM »
Greetings All,

Today was the end of a long dry spell as I got to the farm with the 76 for a little shooting.   :)  Some months back, Jamison got the .45-75 cases back in stock and I added a supply to the cabinet.  This was a chance to see how the development of a load compared to the Rocky Mountain Cartridge brass loads faired.  As always the disclaimer, This load is what I developed for my rifle.  I accept NO responsibility for these loads and offer them as information only.  Ok, the disclaimer out of the way, the following is the results of 12 rounds in the new Jamison Brass.  The load development used the following components:
Primer: Winchester Large Rifle
Powder: Accurate Arms 5744
Bullet: Meister Bullet 350grain flat nose (.458”)
Filler: Puff-Lon ballistic filler and lubricant
Here are the results side by side with the RMC load development for comparison (missing numbers are result of errors on the chronograph readings):
LOAD grs                  Jamison Brass                    Rocky Mountain Cartridge Brass
23.0                           1231                                     -----------
                                  1212                                     -----------
23.5                            1257                                     1232
                                  1237                                     ----------
24.0                            1273                                     ----------
                                   1261                                    1266
24.5                            1300                                    1286
                                  1301                                    1286
25.0                            1322                                     1318
                                  1335                                     1309
25.5                            1351                                     1357
                                  1353                                     1363

The results sort speaks for itself.   The Jamison development loads were very close to the RMC results.  My brother-in-law helped with running the loads across the chronograph.  We indulged in a few more shots with the RMC loads already worked up after getting done with the testing.  Think there is a new convert to the 76 fan club as he liked the rifle.  Brother-in-law is a lever action shooter more so than I am, as he owns some nice Marlins and took to the 76 quickly.
After the shooting, we were sitting with my Dad while I cleaned the rifle.  As we talked, I wondered what I reckoned about the results.  Ya can see the two brands of brass gave pretty much the same results.  The point of impact from both were the same on target from the rifle.  I figure the load is good in both cases.
Function of the Jamison brass was flawless through the rifle.  There was some concern as the rims on Jamison is slightly thinner that the RMC, but other than not being as firm on chambering there was no difference in the two.
I reckon it is a good thing to have these two good companies making brass for the 76.  While I am sure there is differences on things like the internal capacity in grams of water between the two, for me at least the workup was so close as to use the same loads in both.  Going over this with my Dad and brother-in-law they agreed.  Next on the to do list, shooting sticks.  We did try a few shots at 50 and 100 yards but did it freehand just to see how things would go.  Well, we kept em on the paper at least, but to see what the rifle will do we need to setup our shooting bench and get the shooting sticks ready.  This way my Dad can join back in with us as he says it is just too heavy to hold on target freehand (let me tell ya, he holds his own with us as it is so can’t wait to get him on a rest shooting it!).
Hopefully won’t be so long till we can get this ready and start working on marksmanship at range.  It was good to be with family and enjoy the 4th in a way that goes hand and hand with our nations independence.  Hope all had a good 4th of July!

PB

PB - nice report full of details and a good day with your Dad and B-I-L.
When it comes to cases, there are are Chevy's, Chrysler's, Fords and Yugo's.  IMO, Bertram brass are Yugo's.  Their QC hs decreased immensely and I avoid their brass in favor of RMC.
