RN bullets in Henry
« on: October 01, 2013, 02:35:49 PM »
My Lyman 427666 RNFPs feed just fine in my 44-40 Uberti '66, but not in my Uberti Henry. Commercial 200 gr RNFPs feed just fine in both.
I just cast a batch of NEI 200 gr RN. Is the world as I know it going to end if I use them in the Henry?

I have been present when two Henry's had detonations in the mag tube. Both were loaded with RNFPs. In both instances, the shooter slapped the nose cap shut, allowing the follower to drop unimpeded. One was loaded with 10 rds, the other with 5. Three rds detonated in each case.
Examining the suspect ammo, no high primers were found and I don't recall the brand name. Comments, opinions .... ?

I know people that have used RN bullets in their lever action rifles for years without incident - pistol calibre and rifle.

I am curious as to why the 427666 feeds well in one Uberti but not the other, since their actions are the same.  When you say it won't feed, do you mean it hangs up trying to enter the chamber?  If so, I wonder if the carrier is rising slightly more or less on the Henry compared to the '66.

You asked for opinions.  I personally would not use a round nose bullet in the Henry if I had any other choice.

I'm embarrassed to admit to the solution .... (blush) ....

When even RN bullets were not feeding, it became obvious that there was something amiss. The cartridge lifter was not coming up well.
The rifle action was DRY, including the mag tube and spring. Amazing what a little lube in the right places will accomplish .....

Seems I was a little over zealous in cleaning and less so in the lubrication. All is well.
