Hi Guys!

Was hoping for a little direction. A group and I are searching for site that Pvt. Leander Gregg was killed in 1871 ( http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,10937.0.html ).

A body was found in the early 1970s that was eroded from an arroyo. The guy who found it said it was wrapped in a "yellow raincoat". I realize this body could be anyone and likely not our soldier, but does that make sense to anyone that something the 4th Cavalry would have could match up to that description?

The 4th Cavalry - and everyone else - was issued rubber blankets - like a poncho.

The 'yellow raincoat' may've been an old 'Fish Slicker' - used by cowhands and well-liked - sometimes serving as burial shrouds.

Soldier burials usually feature General Service buttons - but it's likely his individual equipment was salvaged and returned to Camp.

What color was the rubber blanket? Would a cavalry member have a "fish slicker"?

Not in 1871 even private purchase, those came out in the early 1880's but the exact date escapes me right now.

It sounds like he found a drover that died on a cattle drive.
