Hmmm ....
« on: September 11, 2015, 12:21:55 PM »
At the recent SASS Champs in Mission, BC, I was the only one who shot BP in the single shot rifle match. I was amazed at this.

I just don't see the point in shooting a BPCR like a Sharps, '85 or Rolling Block with smokeless. Oh well, guess it's something a purist has to live with.

Spoken like a true BPCR "rifleman"!

Some things are too sacred to mess with. Thank God for guys like Mike Venturino, Steve Garbe and Dave Gullo who can prove in competition what works best in BPCR's of the Cowboy era.

If you don't know who those men are, you likely shoot the other stuff in your BPCR's. Pity ..... ;>)

Yeah, it's fun to shoot both single shots and levers in a sorta long range competition (200 yards offhand) , and beat the smokeless guys in both categories - even with their mouse phart loads!  ;D

Just got back from the range with my 'Business Rifle'. I was using a new set of prone x-stix I just made as I find that sitting with x-stix doesn't work all that well for me. Load was 62 grs FFg and 500 gr bullets lubed with SPG.

A slight adjustment was needed in elevation and I put three rds into 4" at 200m. That'll do. It was so cloudy (almost dark) that I couldn't see bullet holes at 300m through the spotting scope, so that will have to wait for a sunny day.

While I'm doing this, guys with scoped rifles shooting from the bench with sand bags and 'lead sleds" are patting themselves on the back for shooting larger groups at 100m. And these guys are going hunting?

I wish I could generate interest in 200m off hand Schuetzen-style matches with two categories - iron sights and scopes. I should live so long .....

PJ,

Just a thought on my part, is that many hunters can't distinguish there prey/target from the background clutter much beyond 150 yards/meters through their normal sights.
Of course lighting has a great deal to do with this at these longer ranges.
My best,

The bush in this neck of the woods makes it impossible to see game much past 100 yds. That would be a long shot on most occasions, unless the animal is across a clear cut or lake like our resident meese.

A neighbour just got back from a sheep hunt and claims to have made a 450 yard shot to get his ram. I believe him. He and his partner worked hard to get the shot and even harder afterwards.

Recently a couple of sheep hunters were attacked by a Grizzly who was after the meat in their backpacks. We've had seven Grizzly attacks this season, four in the last ten days. The bears show up at the sound of a gun shot or smell of a gut pile. The last case was the hunters simply walking near the carcass of a kill made by a sow with two cubs.

Most hunters I know are 'road warriors', shooting the animals they spot while driving logging roads. I prefer driving to where I can hunt on foot for the experience of just being there.

Anyhoo - we're a way off topic .....
