Lyman #2 Tang Sight
« on: January 19, 2012, 06:29:39 PM »
Might anyone know if the Lyman sight advertised for the model 1873 will work on the 1876?  If not, any suggestions for a period correct sight that will work well for 200 yards?

Hi Outlaw,
I use the Marbles tang sight for the 1873 on my 1876 because it moves the stem further forward and leaves room for my thumb. I think that the hole spacing is the same. There is plenty of room to clear the bolt at its furthest rearward point. Call Buffalo Arms and ask them.

Hi Outlaw,
It may depend on wheather you have an Uberti or a Chaparral.  I have a Chaparral and the Lyman No.2 for the 1886 Winchester fits.  My original M'1886 and my Chaparral M'1876 have the same hole spacing.  Not sure what the spacing is on the Uberti rifles.  Windage adjustment with this sight, if needed, is a simple matter of shimming one side of the base or the other.  This is a one time, permanent fix and does not have to be repeated.  I am quite happy with this sight on both my M'1876 & M'1886 rifles.

The advantage of the Marbles sight is the windage adjustment.  For shims under the Lyman #2, I use pistol cartridge brass.  As the case walls are tapered, it leaves you with a shim thicker on one side.  Cut the head off a 38 Spl case, flatten and clip with tinsnips to suit, and along the way drill proper sized holes. If you need a greater degree of windage use a 9mm case as the case wall thickness/taper is greater.

I discussed with Buffalo Arms today.  They said the angle on the Lyman #2 is not quite right for the Uberti 1876, and it will not stand straight.  He said they receive many requests for a 1876 specific sight, but none of the manufacturers are listening.  I'm in NCOWS and am locked into the year 1878, and I don't think the Marbles sight was yet invented.

HELLO
A MUCH NICER AND CLASSIER WAY TO ADJUST A TANG SIGHT FOR WINDAGE IS TO SIMPLY STONE THE BASE EDGE THE NEEDS THE CORRECTION. GO SLOW AND TEST FIRE, YOU WILL GET THERE.

GOOD LUCK
