Rags
« on: August 23, 2005, 02:56:31 PM »
How many folks wear cowboy rags and do you use a slide (like your SAS badge)? I have been doing research on cavalry scarves and found many wore them but usually not yellow. Custer wore a dark blue one with a 7th Cav pin as a catch slide. I am thinking dark blue or red. Also when I search I find the rags are really large (42")? Thx.

LazyK, you can tie it with a slipknot or use a slide, whichever you prefer, but a cowboy never tied it in a way that it wouldn't come loose if it got snagged on a branch, etc, unless you wanted to hang yourself.

Do folks always wear them tied in the front or "Duke" style back to front? Thx.

I've seen em tied front, back and sideways. It seems to be a personal preference.

I wear them at times. I just tie a knot and usually put it to the side. I don't believe the Enlisted Cavalry ever wore the yellow scarves like you see in the movies.

This is my slide.  It is a large concho with a ring on the back.  My rags are standard cotton bandanas.  I have several of them, mostly paisley.  I do have a Jack Daniels Field Tester bandana that I wear on occasion.  This usually gets a few laughs.

LazyK, don't worry about color so much. The enlisted troopers bought their own scarves and wore what they could get, except for Jack Daniels Field Tester rags.

The Buff was sacred to the Indians and with my persona of a White, raised by the Arapaho, I had to honor the beast.

I use a slide with a cat on it. You figure out the meaning on your own.
