Uberti Cattleman Carbine
« on: July 07, 2011, 04:21:42 AM »
What do ya use ta get the primers on the nipples? I have snail cappers, inline cappers, they don't fit. I have a Pietta Buntline Special 44 and I modified one of my inline cappers ta work on that. I have an ASM open top 44 the inline works on that. I'm hopin I don't have ta grind the outer edges of  the nipple recesses, but its lookin like that may be the route I'll have ta take. WM

Which model are you talking about?  Cattleman is sort of a generic Uberti name.  Are you talking about the Remington?  If so, capping can be a pain as you have found out.  You can try to modify and inline to work.  But the long range best solution is to open the nipple windows.

It's a Remington and the inline I have has been modified enough that it barely holds the cap. I can open the nipple windows but I am thinking of adding a bushing (is that the right term?) to the front of the cylinder to reduce the fowling problem. I have already changed the nipples as they were to narrowly tapered and #11 caps would not fit snugly. WM

Look at the cylinder on the left.  Treso nipples (Tresos and Remington #10s are almost standard fair for serious cap gunners) and a front bushing.  You also have to mill the frame to make room for the bushing.

Yes, I realize that. A guy I shoot with is a gunsmith and I will probably have him do the bushing for me. Although I shoot quite  often, twice a week average, I would not classify myself as a serious C&B shooter. I just like ta shoot. Thanks. WM

Might try converting one of your inline cappers so they feed the caps straight out the end of the capper. Someone on CASCity suggested this on an old thread.

I have one of the old Italian straightline cappers manufactured to work thiat way. Paid about $1.99 for it back in the early 70's....Capping is a breeze on everything I've used it on.
