unburned powder
« on: November 04, 2011, 06:42:15 PM »
I finally got some AA 5744 and loaded up some 45-75. Went to the range and they felt good to shoot but lots of unburned powder in the barrel, chamber, and action....some cases are dimpled from unburned squashed powder in the chamber........ pain to clean....Why all the unburned powder....anyone else have this problem..
Thanks,
Wyattm

Unburned powder is common with AA5744.  The lighter the load the more unburned powder.  You can reduce the amount of unburned powder by using a heavy crimp, using a filler or using a heavier load.

Drop down about 10 percent to start, and see what happens.  Work up one grain weight at a time. IMR3031 will give some unburned powder in straight-side cases, but if you have a good roll crimp, this should help.  You might also try IMR4198, but may need some filler to get good combustion.  I use a 1/4 square of single ply toilet paper pushed gently into the case.

Wyatt,
I use AA5744 in my 45-60 and load a little more than you do but I fill the rest of the case to the mouth with Puff-Lon filler. With this load there is no unburned powder left. I have been amazed at how well Puff-Lon works and now use it in all my reloading (I only load cartridges originally for Black Powder). Try it you might like it.
