Micheal Price San Francisco Ivory hilted Bowie Knife
« on: April 26, 2010, 12:22:40 PM »

Micheal Price San Francisco Ivory hilted Bowie Knife. This superb example is 11 1/4" long overall, with blade being a Meaty 6 5/8" long. This knife feels about as good as any knife ever did in your hand. I absolutely love it. It stands on its own, but there is a hefty amount of history that goes with it, in letter form with a photo of the owner holding it in his hand. I have the original documentation by one of its previous owners.

It reads as follows..."The bowie knife which I am holding in the attached photograph has been in my possession for many, many years and was passed down to me by family members. It was made by Michael Price of San Francisco and is so marked. The knife is 11 5/16" in overall length and has a blade of 6 5/8" long. It has walrus ivory grip panels with old cracks throught the first rivet. (there is alot about a new 2nd sheath that I am cutting out).... This bowie knife was originally purchased from Michael Price by Brigadier General Charles Albert Woodruff, an ancestor of my first wife. Charles Woodruff enlisted in Co. A, 10th Vermont Volunteers in 1862. He served throughout the Civil War, was at the battle of Cold Harbor and wounded a total of four times. After the war he went to West Point and graduated in 1871. He was commissioned a 2nd lt. In the 7th infantry, he served during the Indian Wars and was at the Battle of Big Hole. He recieved three more wounds fighting Indians. He was stationed at Fort Hood in Montana and was breveted Captain in 1877 for gallantry in action. It is probable that he carried his knife during these Indian campaigns as he always had the knife on his many hunting and exploring trips in the West. He was promoted up the ranks and became Colonel in 1898. He served against the Spanish in the Philippines at the end of the last Century and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1903. He kept his home at the corner of Lombard and Van Ness Streets in San rancisco. He became Commandant of the Veteran's Home of California in 1909 and pased away in 1920. During WWI he gave his knife to his son, Edward "Duff" Woodruff, to use in his own military service. Edward had very bad eyes but he wanted to fight so badly that he memorized the eye chart and was accepted into the service. After the war Edward established a horse and cattle ranch where the Price knife came in very handly." _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ " Berkeley, CA

You can't find a knife with a better pedigree than that and only a few hands removed from Michael Price and the original owner. $6,950.00
I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I require the same of them."
