We're going to include a new opportunity at the regular 5 Dogs Creek (Bakersfield) match on Feb 28-March 1. As a "match within a match" we'll be offering the opportunity to compete with Victorian-era military firearms. We will be shooting the same course of fire as the regular SASS match, EXCEPT our rifle targets will be set at 50+ yards and will consist of condemed steel targets that are no longer used for main matches.
This category will be similar to GAF, with some changes in deference to the club and range norms. That means one rifle, one pistol and a shotgun. The rifle and pistol should be of a type issued together by some Victorian-era military (examples: trapdoor Springfield and Colt SAA; Krag and "pencil-barrelled" .38 Colt revolver as used by U.S. troops in Spanish-American war; Moisin-Nagant rifle and S&W Russian revolver; Lee-Enfield rifle and Webley revolver). We will broadly define "Victorian" as before 1904. This should allow '03 Springfields, but avoid autoloading pistols (which require significantly different range procedures than the club norm). We'll offer four categories (single shot rifle/single action revolver, repeating rifle/single action revolver, single shot rifle/double action revolver and repeating rifle/double action revolver)
Pump shotguns will be permitted to load magazines with more than two rounds, but it must be done on the clock. ALL pistol and shotgun ammunition MUST follow SASS specifications. Rifle ammunition may be jacketed, since we are not concerned with damaging the rifle targets.
We strongly encourage competitors to be in uniform if possible, but will not absolutely require it. We want shooters to have a chance to try something new, and don't want to discourage them by being too rigid. A khaki or blue shirt would be in the spirit of the weekend, with perhaps a campaign hat if you happen to own one.
I would like to be as flexible and inviting as possible, while recognizing that we are sharing the range with a regular monthly SASS match. If you have any questions, please PM me. If you plan on participating, I'd appreciate hearing in advance so we know how many to expect in this category. If you have any questions about what constitutes accptable firearms, please contact me (I wil probably apply the "ten feet rule", as in "If it looks correct from ten feet away, it's probably okay")
We shoot five stages on Saturday and five on Sunday. Camping is available on the range. Go to
