Well, I have been shooting my Marlin 44-40 cowboy limited for a year now. I love it but just aquired an Uberti Winchester 73 in 44-40 and shot it for the first time last weekend. I love it too!

I want to keep both but I am entertaining the thought of trading the Marlin for a rifle in 45-70 or one of the 1876 calibers. Prefer a Winchester 1876 just for the time period.

My 73 is made by Uberti but imported by Cabelas. I was surprised how good it shot. Grouped 2" at 50 yards with 38 grains Pryodex-P....by volume of course! It shot very consistant at 100 yards too!

Would an even trade, Marlin Limited for a Winchester 1876, be a fair trade? What calibers are better for the 76?

You won't regret getting qa '76, but it is not available in 45/70. I think the calibers are 45/60, 40/65, 45/75/, and 50/95. Don't know the value of the Marlin you have, but these Uberti's vary in price by who you buy from and what importer - probably $700.00 - $1100.00 range MSRP. Marlin 1895 model is in 45/70 if you definately want that caliber.

I shoot a Yellow Boy, a 186o, and a '73 in 44-40 also. Love the cartridge! Good luck making a decision

Ah man, a typo! I ment 45-75 but after ready on the 45-60 being tapered instead of bottlenecked, maybe the 45-60. Ah heck, I'll take one of each!

The 45-60 is mighty hard to beat . With twice the thumpin power of the 44wcf .

The Winchester 76 will be much more expensive than the Marlin. You'll have to pay at about $1300 for it, which means I'd guess you'll have to pay about $500 or $600 difference to get it. I'd love to have one also, but opted for a Marlin 336 Cowboy in 38-55 just because it was so much less money. While Marlin has discontinued the 38-55 chambering, there are still a lot of new ones on Gunbroker, etc. I got one for $800 NIB.

When all the dust settles, step up to the plate and get the big daddy - an Uberti 1876 in .50-95. It is the coolest rifle on the planet

It shoots a 300-350gr bullet real fast. So recoil 'taint bad at all.
