Uberti Stock Refinish
« on: December 03, 2017, 04:55:22 PM »
At the urging of others here, I finally worked up the nerve to refinish some gun stocks.  I started with a Uberti revolver grip and a Rossi '92 (which had a very dark stain covering all of the wood grain).  I then swallowed hard, took a deep breath and started in on my Uberti '76 carbine.  It was tough because it began with less of the red-tinted plastic finish than my other Uberti guns had.  On the other hand, I still didn't like the looks, so I went for it.

I stripped the finish with Citristip, but had trouble getting every bit of finish off the gun.  In the stripped photo, you'll see remaining finish that is mostly covered by the barrel band.  I then dyed with leather dye, slightly cut with alcohol.  I think that I got it a shade or two darker than ideal, but it's OK.  I also didn't do a great job making the color even, but some of what you see in the photo is shadows.  I then finished with a few coats of Tru-Oil.

Aside from wishing that it was a little lighter, I think it came out OK.  It's certainly better than it was when it started.  I post photos of a couple of revolvers under another thread.

Thanks, fellas.

Thanks for the comments, fellas.  I'm satisfied with the result.  As I said, if I did it again, I'd have made it a bit lighter, but I see a lot of variation among originals.  Of course those are all antiques and may have darkened over the years.  On the other hand, it's just a reproduction anyway--as long as it looks good to me, that what I'm after.

In the end that's all that matters. It looks good to me and I have done several.

For myself, I like the looks of the darker wood on the old original rifles, but that probably wouldn't look good on a repo. Plus a few "character" marks are a plus.  :)

Thanks again for the positive comments.  I've noticed that the stock looks different in different lights.  I'm beginning to really like it.  I also did some serious historical research (I re-watched a few scenes from "Crossfire Trail") and noted that, while that gun has much nicer wood, the tone of the finish is similar.  There--positive proof of the historical accuracy!
