How Bullet Lube Works

Here is THE best article I've ever read explaining the scientific means of bullet lubrication in a gun's bore.

Excellent article.

Regarding the concept of lube being pumped out of the lube groove by compression, that is exactly the theory Pigeon Roost Slim was working under when he developed the first Big Lube Black Powder bullet, the PRS 250. I had several conversations with Slim on this concept and he provided me with some ratios to use when I was designing the J/P 45-200 bullet. His idea seems to be working.
That’s bad business! How long do you think I’d stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he’d pay me that much to stop robbing him, I’d stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Ho Kid,

I had a squib round yesterday.  The bullet stopped just short of the muzzle.  I learned a LOT from that squib.

First, the PL-II lube had started to move.  It was doing it's job even though the pressure was very low.

Second, the rear driving band, lube and front driving bands made a very effective "piston" with the driving bands being the "rings" and the lube being the piston.  There was absolutely NO evidence of gas leakage.

Third, even though the bullet drove fairly easily from the barrel of my ROA, it was completely engraved.

Fourth, I learned that I have to put powder in the case. . . ;D

Anyway, it was informative to dismantle a loaded round that way.

Ok Kid, you Gizmo.

It don't happen often, but once is way too much.  I stood there with my ROA pointed downrange till the RO took it in his hands. It was my last boolit of the stage.

I hate squibs, but it only proves that no matter how many thousand rounds you load, you can get one of 'em.

Shoot safe.  Enjoy the sport.  If a squib happens, try to learn from it.

Let the smoke roll.
