Lyman 45 Postell Diameter
« on: February 19, 2007, 11:16:42 AM »
Anyone out there know what the drop diameter is for the Lyman 45 Postell bullet (#457132 - 535 gr)?

I am thinking it might be the bullet for my IAB Sharps for longer ranges...short is working just fine with the Big Lube 390...I am just looking for something a little heavier that sticks out farther to get closer to the bore.

Any one have any comments the the Postel - good or badl?

Bullet Dia. varies with the alloy used, the less tin and antimony you use the smaller the Dia. I would hazard a guess though that the would come out real near 0.459 with a lead/tin mix for black powder.

Howdy, Little Al!  We have a purty famous "Little Al" here in Indy.  You aren't him, are ya?  Do ya like to drive REAL fast?

Lyman's paperwork says .458" and they base that size on their mix # 2 which is pretty standard and close to 20-1 if I'm not mistaken.  I looked the figures up 'cause I have the same mould and have heard nothing but good about it.

Happy shootin' !

Thanks for the input - I will probably be putting 20-1 or 30-1 thru it...would that make it drop a little smaller or bigger? Newbie questions, I know but there is some technical stuff when reckoning with this long range type stuff.

I figure I'll still use my .459 lube sizer and it may lube 'em pretty quick without any distortion...

Probably should slug my barrel as well...

Howdy, Little Al!

Have ya got it figured out and dialed in, yet?

I kinda lost track of this post.  I'm NOT a casting expert, nor do I portray one on TV, but I'd think that pure lead would drop @ .458" and a higher tin alloy maybe .459".  I have been casting the BigLube tm bullet for my 45 Colt that is designed to drop at .454", but I have been using nearly pure wheelweight alloy and they're averaging .458" or .459"!  I'm gonna send it back to Lee, 'cause Dick D said that that's some TOO BIG even for wheelweight alloy, so my mould may be oversize to start with.  I realize what I mentioned is about a pistol mould, but the idea is the same.
