Barrel Wrench
« on: February 28, 2006, 09:58:35 PM »
I got a barrel changing project coming up. l'm no gunsmith so I don't have a proper barrel wrench, whatever that may be.  What do y'all use for removing a SAA barrel? or What can I use for this job?  I gots the bench vice and lots of scrap lumber and leather for padding.  Thanks for any suggestions that require only "home handyman" tools.  ;D

Ok, I've seen folks say to take a 4X2, drill a hole in it slightly smaller than the barrel.  Saw'er in half through the hole, rosin the grooves and clamp the barrel in that in the vice.  Take the cylinder out and use a stout hunk of hard wood in the window of the frame to unscrew it.

Before you bugger up a good gun, I suggest you go to a competent gunsmith. I have seen Larry Crow's video on tuning the Ruger Vaquero and he covers barrel removal...Now, I'm real danged handy, having built golf clubs, fishing rods, and even airplanes but after viewing his video, I wouldn't try it without the proper tools.

Brownells sells barrel vises and the proper frame wrenches but unless you're goin into the 'smithing biz the prices are more than a gunsmith would charge for several guns.

just MHO...'n my 2 cents worth ::)
