I'm interested in learning more about the dimensional differences between the Uberti and Pietta reproductions of the Colt 1851. I understand that the Uberti is the closest thing to a recreation of the original 1851, while the Pietta has a longer cylinder and a shorter forcing cone on the barrel. Along with that I know that the Pietta 44 Navy is a fantasy gun that never existed in history before, and has a step in the frame to allow the larger stepped barrel like in the Colt 1860. Besides that I am not sure how the frames may differ between each other, let alone from the original Colt 1851 besides the modern alloys for the parts.
Some more specific questions I am curious about. Does the barrel of the .44 Pietta have a greater outer diameter than that of the .36 caliber Pietta or Uberti? Could I hypothetically take a Uberti frame, mill a step in it, and switch in a Pietta 44 cylinder and barrel?
