Shotshell Holder
« on: February 22, 2015, 08:20:53 AM »
Howdy All,

I was going to put this in the reloading forum, but you guys are so good at answering questions, I thought I'll ask here.

I'm using a Lee LoadAll II which can get tedious loading black powder.  What I'm wanting to do is de-prime, size and re-prime 25 to 50 shells at a time on the Lee, then load them with powder and finish on the Lee.  What I'm looking for is some kind of tray to hold the shells upright.

I keep seeing trays for finished reloads but nothing that looks like it will hold the shells right side up rather than upside down.

Does anyone make a reloading tray for shot shells like the ones for rifle and pistol ammo?

Thanks!

Sgt. John

I'm wondering if the plastic trays that fit ammo boxes might work.  If you can find some in 10ga, the 12ga shells might fit the other way around with crimp end up. . .

Oops, this works with 16ga hulls in a 10ga tray but not 12ga.  Sorry about that.

Next best, take a forsner bit and drill a wood block.

If you have a drilll press and scrap wood they are easy to make.  My first was purchased at a gunstore, but made up by a local handi man. I mislaid it in my last move 7 years ago so I just made one up myself.

It was just a few minutes of drilling, but a half hour or so of measuring and laying out. I started with a 2" X 8" and a large bit. Going Hi-end with neat hardwood and perhaps a plywood base to avoid cracking, is an easy step.

Years ago Flambeau made a Shotgun loading tray called the "Twin Fifty". One side for 20 & 28 gauge, the other for 16 & 12 gauge.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to find one at a garage sale.

This tray is about 12" square and holds 50 in a checker board square pattern.

I would assume this was made in the 1970 as I bought other Flambeau plastic products at that time.

I am sure that others may have the same Holder.

I made mine out of a 6" x 6" x 3/4" thick piece of pine. It will hold 25 shells. I laid out the holes and drilled them with a 15/16" spade bit to a depth of 3/8". Be careful drilling because the longer, pointy part of the bit will poke out the bottom a little.

The spade bit doesn't make the prettiest holes, but with a coat of stain it's pretty enough.

My solution is very simple. Put your Black in the powder hopper. Open a bushing until it throws the charge you like and load the shells.

Back when I shot a lot of trap and skeet I used a box made by MEC. It had two trays that held a total of four boxes of shells and worked very well. I used it for awhile after I started CAS.

Here ( I hope) is a picture of one of the trays.

Why not try a pharmacy or hospital and ask for trays for testtubes?
Might have the right caliber  ;)

and they came in large trays like the one on the picture just perfect for 12 gauge  ;D
